Hello! My name is Brittney. I am a current elementary special education teacher in Georgia. I work mainly with students who require just a little extra help, but spend most of their day in general education classrooms. However, I am trained in specialized, differentiated instruction for students with a huge range of disabilities, needs, and strengths. I graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, PA in May 2011 with a GPA of 3.3 and majors in English and Psychology. Before college, I went to high school in southern California, where my GPA stayed at a solid 4.0 for four years. My favorite hobbies are reading, writing, arts and crafts, and swimming. I love children's literature in particular, although I'll read almost anything. I've worked with children as young as four months to seventeen years old, including as an aide in a preschool for children with language difficulties and as a Girl Scout camp counselor in Texas. My strengths are phonics, vocabulary, and spelling, as well as knowing exactly what new books are out there that will finally be the One that gets your child to love reading.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I was diagnosed with ADHD myself as a young woman in college, and so I have experience coming up with solutions to deal with inattention during studying. My younger brother has also had severe ADHD his entire life; I have tutored him throughout high school. Most saliently, I am currently a special education teacher for third graders who are taught in the resource setting--many of them have ADHD (as well as other disorders).

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a clear renewable certificate for general and special education for grades pre-k through 8. The certificate is good for five years. I currently teach third graders who are in a resource classroom, meaning that they receive specialized instruction in the same exact content as all third grade students learning Common Core standards in Georgia, however, their disabilities require modifications in presentation or in the setting they are taught. I also spend a huge part of my day in the regular classroom, as a resource for special education students but instructing all students--special and general educated alike--in the same content.

English

I majored in English at college, and it was my favorite subject during junior high and high school. Despite sometimes being consumed with the demands of living a life, I have never stopped reading for pleasure.

Grammar

My love for reading and writing has provided me with a strong grasp on both grammar and spelling.

Special Needs

I have a clear renewable certificate for general and special education for grades pre-k through 8. The certificate is good for five years. I am currently a special education teacher for third grade students in a resource classroom, which means I teach part of my day inside my own small room, as well as in the general education classroom in the inclusion setting.

Spelling

My love for reading and writing has provided me with a strong grasp on both grammar and spelling.

Writing

Writing, I believe, goes hand in hand with a passion for reading. I enjoy writing short stories and poetry in particular, but I also have extensive experience in academic writing (including my senior thesis, which was required of every English major at my college).
