I am a chemistry tutor. I graduated from Cornell College and majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have tutored chemistry for the past five years and have hundreds of hours of experience; I have had the opportunity to work with students all at different levels of understanding. I enjoy tutoring people - my favorite moment is the 'ah-hah' moment when students put together a difficult concept.
One of the things students tell me I am especially talented at is at approaching problems from all angles, and being able to explain concepts in many different ways. I strongly feel that repeating a problem or re-reading the same passage repeatedly is not the way to go, and that everybody requires a different approach (cliched, but very true). The goal is never memorization; we always try for comprehension in my sessions. Students who work for mastery with me always improve their grades, oftentimes more than expected by focusing on 'how to learn chemistry' and not only 'how to pass.'
Sessions include explanation and review of concepts, breakdown of problems, guided problem work and solving, and test taking skills.
Areas I have experience in and can help: high school chemistry, AP chemistry, the chemistry SAT II, placing into accelerated introductory college chemistry, and college general chemistry I and II.
I say in advance; I prefer to meet in public places nearby (a coffee shop, library). One of the reasons for this is that it helps my transportation costs (and lowers my hourly rate) and puts us both in a setting without distractions. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions!
