I’ve tutored since college, running after school sessions during the week, then peer-tutoring alongside Harvard and MIT peers on weekends. After college, I worked with the Boston Public Schools system and the Upward Bound college prep program teaching and tutoring students in English, Math, Reading and Art. My work with elementary, high school and college students have garnered awards including “Best Tutor,” “Best Counselor,” and “Best Teacher," and a Spirit of Idealism Award. I currently tutor in English/ Reading, Writing, Literature and test prep. Additionally, I help teams and individuals develop oral and written presentation skills, from Public Speaking, Visioning and Leadership Development to Drama/ Theater and Filmmaking.

As a tutor, I find that if you can get kids interested, their fear of failing gives way to curiosity. In film, we use math to set a scene's lighting ratio, and employ literary concepts to compose a frame. Whether building a camera or a set, I rely on tutor lessons that organization and a consistent, systematic approach are key to success. I seek to set a similar foundation in my students, and will go the distance to help them achieve, passing on what other tutors have taught me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have previously worked as Recruitment Manager for City Year Boston, recruiting high school and college students for a year of service, after which I helped them craft college/ graduate school essays.

I have also previously worked as Project Coordinator for Boston's Higher Education Resource Center, guiding high school students at five citywide service centers to select college prep courses, review and prepare college application essays and participate in College Board workshops and leadership training.

Current work with college and grad school applicants on their essays involves the following steps:
-- inventory their interests, experiences and personal style or passion to find a personal point of entry into the essay question, and posit their topic statement.
-- shape the body with specific, supporting examples and anecdotes to communicate a clear point of view, and
-- reiterate his/her stance alongside goals for impactful, memorable impression showcasing the applicant's voice/ character/drive and personality.

I helped my most recent student craft his college essay after being contacted last minute (a day before deadline). After we reworked his essay, he received early acceptance to his schools of choice.

I've also aided my Wyzant students in writing and revising essays to improved grades.

Film

I have written and directed several award-winning shorts. I love seeing the world anew through a lens - be it a visual composition on screen or on paper in screenplay form- and I enjoy teaching and helping younger filmmakers explore their interests and strengths with the camera.

Equipped with an MFA in writing and directing, I've taught introductory film to middle and high school students using video cameras to explore subjects of interest. They then edited the projects for a culmination viewing event for friends and family who were blown away by all they've learned and accomplished.

I love film and I enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge with others seeking to develop their own passion and craft for moving pictures.

General Computer

I am very familiar with and knowledgeable about computers. I teach/tutor general computer use with clear, easy-to-understand instructions, covering the following and more:

Equally dexterous with Windows and Mac Operating Systems
Microsoft Office Suite - Windows XP, Vista, 2007
Applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Access.
Internet, Emailing, Social Media, Blogging

Macintosh

I enjoy helping others develop their Mac proficiency, comfortably navigating the Mac OS interface from basic operations to uninstalling programs and devices. After a few sessions with me, you will be able to:

- Move confidently around the Mac OS system from desktop to menus, and keyboard shortcuts; locate, alter or delete programs or install new applications.

- Manipulate windows (minimize, resize, etc.), create shortcuts, add/move/delete widgets or extensions.

- Access, connect or remove external storage devices from CDs, USB drives to cloud devices like iTunes Match, Dropbox, YouSendit and more.

Public Speaking

Public speaking in the form of presentation, oratory, or declamation has been a key factor in my development from mousy to confident speaker; and I am familiar with the fears and concerns that many face in a public speaking engagement. From general tips, to suggested reading and exercises for speech, posture and attitude, I can help you develop your confidence speaking in a room or group of people, prepare a speech or practice for a competition.
What I cover in Public Speaking lessons: Naming/ Addressing your fears & anxiety; Common speaking mistakes; Preparation and Exercises; and general tips such as the importance of visual aids, eye contact, handling a difficult audience; and how to deal with missing/ failed equipment for a presentation. Finally, Public Speaking can be fun once you understand and employ a basic but very necessary tactic: Practice! Practice! Practice!

Study Skills

As one whose education career took off once I grasped and applied key study skills, I can help allay the frustrations and challenges students have with schoolwork not for inability, but inadequate study skills. From organization to note-taking and steps to develop critical thinking, I ensure success, foster confidence and build motivation and ownership in my students.

Areas I cover in study skills are organization, time management, learning styles, note-taking strategies, test-taking anxiety-management tips, and memory tips.
