I have always had a passion for languages. My mother is an English teacher, so I grew up with a healthy respect for the English language, scoring a 5 on the AP English assessment in high school. When I started learning German in middle school, this background in the understanding of grammar greatly helped me in learning German. In turn, German gave me a better appreciation of elements of English since they come from the same language tree.
In high school, I won a trip to Germany based on my performance on a national exam, as well as many awards in a high school German competition in Tennessee. I have a Bachelor of Arts in German (summa cum laude). I was again in Germany for about a month after my freshman year for a class related to Berlin. I spent my junior year in Mannheim, Germany, studying at a business school and then gaining practical experience in the German workforce with an internship at BASF.
More recently, I received a Fulbright grant to teach English in a German high school for a year. I lived and worked in northern Germany. I taught English in twelve different classes and also tutored on a regular basis, two high school students and two professionals.
When working in a foreign language, I believe that immersion is key, though grammar is easiest to understand in one's native tongue. In any language, I believe that one should have a proper understanding of the rules of the language instead of just being told when one makes mistakes. My goal is to help you to understand these rules. In addition to exercises, practical experience (such as reading long texts or books) is extremely beneficial and increases vocabulary-- it can also be fun and engaging! Today was our first tutoring session with Ariel and I am truly astonished by the amount of material she managed to cover. I have looked at the notes of her lesson and my daughter is able to have a brief conversation in German with me. Ariel is very personable, competent, and confident. My daughter likes her very much. I highly recommend Ariel as a tutor.
Update August 10, 2014: We continue to enjoy the sessions with Ariel. I requested that she review some printed lesson from my daughter's school and Ariel spent the time needed to make sure my daughter was comfortable with the lesson. Very professional, thorough, and a lovely person.
Ariel is always on time and reliable. She works on German vocabulary and written lessons. She does a great job with speaking German. My son was given an A in his last German presentation. His High School Teacher said his pronunciation was very good. Ariel is always prepared and she provides vocabulary to study in between tutoring. My sons knowledge has improved. He is more confident. He is better prepared for tests and quizzes. He likes the tutoring sessions and he feels more confident with his German class. He was able to pass his first year of German and is going to take German II.
We mostly just read. She is very knowledgeable of the way native Germans say things. Helped in my pronunciation of my schoolwork. When I didn't understand the story I was reading she helped me to comprehend what was being read. I recommend her as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My mother is an English teacher and I love to read, hence I have always performed well in English.
In high school I took the AP English exam and received a 5 (the highest score) and graduated high school with a 4.0 and college with a 3.87. This would not have been possible without good English reading and writing skills.
I received a Fulbright grant to work at a high school in Germany teaching English for a year. Outside of class, I tutored English for two students and two professionals. I also have experience tutoring two Korean boys at middle school level.
I have been using a computer as long as I can remember. My father works in IT and we always had access to the internet and a computer. I am most familiar with Windows and Microsoft, but given access to the internet I am able to troubleshoot just about anything. I recently installed a NAS (network attached storage) at work and am currently working on the company website.
I started learning German in 7th grade and continued through my senior year of high school, including taking the AP German course. I attended several state-wide German competitions and won first in many categories every time I competed. After 11th grade I won a trip to Germany sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German based on my performance in a national exam.
I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in German. During my junior year, I studied and worked in Mannheim, Germany; I studied one semester at a business school and then worked for BASF in their Sustainability Department surrounded by German coworkers.
I recently completed my Fulbright year in Kiel, Germany, working at a business-oriented German high school. I attended German classes at the university in Kiel while I was there.
I taught English to non-native speakers for a year in Germany and have experience teaching correct pronunciation of written words. In addition to teaching, I tutored privately for 2 grade school students and 2 professionals.
As a Fulbright grantee, I worked at a German business-oriented high school with German students learning English. It was my responsibility to read and correct my students' work. I also tutored privately and proofread for a doctor working on articles for a medical journal.
My parents encouraged reading from an early age and I have always been an avid reader. I highly support the love of reading in others. My sorority in college supported literacy as its main philanthropy; every Friday we went to a local elementary school and read with a third grade class. We also celebrated Read Across America Day by bringing books and reading with students every year.
As a Fulbright scholar in Germany, I read short stories and a few novels with my English classes.
My mother is an English teacher and I love to read; this has greatly influenced my ability to write. Although I do not write creatively, I am well versed in the essential elements of good academic writing. In high school I took the AP English exam and received a 5 (the highest score) and graduated high school with a 4.0 and college with a 3.87. This would not have been possible without good writing skills.
