Award-Winning Professional Writer/English Instructor/Speech Coach

Don't let the words "award winning" or "professional" give you the impression that I don't understand how hard it is to write and to read comprehensively! I am currently substitute teaching in Clarke County and have recently passed my GACE exams in English, Reading Comprehension and Writing. It is because I am a professional writer, and have experience writing and teaching in all genres--from every type of essay to dissertation work, from prose to playwriting--that I know JUST how difficult and daunting that blank page can be. I have taught English Composition and Creative Writing to high school seniors in California. When I taught at the University of Georgia, and when I tutor students, I always begin by letting him or her know that it is the "student" who is the prime authority on what he or she is writing. Yes, the student may of course need to do research on a particular subject or topic, but after the research is done, it is through the process of writing that the student will discover his or her feelings and thoughts and beliefs about whatever it is they are writing. Writing is an exploration and it can be a fascinating one. Not only can I help a student to improve their grades in a particular course, but I can also help that same student learn more about "themselves." I can help that same student value his or her opinions on a wide spectrum of topics and subjects. If it is creative writing, I can help the student develop his or her own unique "writer's voice." I have acted as guide and dramaturg for over five hundred playwriting/screenwriting students at the University of Georgia.

I also tutor in American history, one of my passions. I continually read and watch documentary material to continue my education in this subject.

As a professor, lecturer, and actress, I can also help with a student's presentation of his/her work. I can help individuals open up opportunities within a career they have already chosen and are employed in, through developing a sense of confidence and, yes, "enjoyment!" in speaking in front of the public. I know, too, how daunting that can be. Think of me as your private mentor, guide, and cheerleader. I believe it is through the affirmation of the talents that each of us possess that we fulfill our greatest potential. That is my philosophy of tutoring and mentoring.

Grammar

As a professional writer and professor of English Composition, I can incorporate correct grammar usage within improving a student's writing skills. The student then can see how correct grammar helps him or her to better communicate their thoughts and feelings, rather than having grammar as a separate skill, which seems to have no relevance to the student.

Reading

I have tutored students from grades 2-12 in reading comprehension and vocabulary. I believe patience and focusing on the positive--allowing the student to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in reading--brings wonderful results and opens up an exciting, challenging world to the student, whatever age!

Writing

I have a B.A. in English, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and a Ph.D. in Theatre, all of which have combined in years of experience in teaching English Composition (all genres of essay writing), and Creative Writing. I have worked as a professional editor and proofreader. Most especially, I have great passion for teaching writing, and a very gentle, supportive and affirmative approach to students.

Literature

My B.A. in English emphasized British and American literature. In addition, as a playwright, I have written plays about famous British writers such as Emily Bronte, who wrote "Wuthering Heights," and have knowledge and a great love of British literature and poetry.

Proofreading

I have over ten years experience as a professional proofreader, besides my experience as a professional writer and editor.

SAT Reading

I am highly experienced in both SAT and GRE reading tests. I have taught Critical Thinking and Critical Reading for Comprehension and am a professional writer and editor. All that means that I can help you enormously to prepare for your SAT Reading test!

ACT English

I am proficient in the English portions of the ACT exam and have experience tutoring students in sample tests, and in helping them in their reading comprehension and analysis.

Theatre

I am a professional playwright whose play, Who Loves You, Jimmie Orrio? won the PEN USA Award for Drama and is published by Dramatic Publishing. I have a background as a professional performer, dancer, and actress. My most recent performance on stage was in 2008 at the University of Georgia in the role of Clytemnestra in Euripides' Iphigenia at Aulis. Ballet

I studied classical ballet for over ten years, performed in a professional dance company until a broken foot ended my professional career. I have continued to take class throughout my life, and have taught ballet to children 8-10 years old. Praxis

GACE is the Georgia equivalent of the Praxis certifiation tests. I recently passed the GACE exams in English I and English II. I am very qualified to tutor an individual wishing to pass either GACE or Praxis exams in English.

Film

I attended the Motion Picture Department of UCLA and have had several screenplays optioned. I have recently adapted my award-winning play, Who Loves You, Jimmie Orrio? for the screen. My agent in New York City is currently marketing this screenplay. I have extensive knowledge of the history of cinema, from the silent film era to the present. I continued to take film classes during my doctoral course work at the University of Georgia from 2003-2007.
