Don't let the word "professional" give you the impression that I don't understand how hard it is to write and to read comprehensively, no matter what your age! I recently returned to California from substitute teaching in Georgia's elementary, middle, and high schools (English/language arts), as well teaching at the University of Georgia. I recently passed my GACE exams in English, reading comprehension and writing and will soon be taking the C-Best exam. It is because I am a professional writer, and have experience writing and teaching in all genres--from every type of essay to dissertation work, from prose to playwriting--that I know JUST how difficult and daunting that blank page can be. I have taught English composition and creative writing to high school seniors in California. When I taught at the University of Georgia, and when I tutor students of all ages, I always begin by letting him or her know that it is the "student" who is the prime authority on what he or she is writing. Yes, the student may of course need to do research on a particular subject or topic, but after the research is done, it is through the process of writing that the student will discover his or her feelings and thoughts and beliefs about whatever it is they are writing. This is true for any student, no matter their age. Writing is an exploration, and it can be a fascinating one. Not only can I help a student to her or his grade in a particular course, but I can also help that same student learn more about "themselves." I can help that same student value his or her opinions on a wide spectrum of topics and subjects. If it is creative writing, I can help the student develop his or her own unique "writer's voice." I have acted as guide and dramaturg for over five hundred playwriting/screenwriting students at the University of Georgia.
I also tutor in American history, one of my passions. I continually read and watch documentary material to continue my education in this subject.
As a theatre professional, I can also help with a student's presentation of his/her work. I can help individuals open up opportunities within a career they have already chosen and are employed in, through developing a sense of confidence and, yes, "enjoyment!" in speaking in front of the public. I know, too, how daunting that can be. Think of me as your private mentor, guide, and cheerleader. I believe it is through the affirmation of the talents that each of us possess that we fulfill our greatest potential. That is my philosophy of tutoring and mentoring.
