In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have experience teaching handwriting, as I have taught Kindergarten and performed many handwriting lessons. I have various resources for letter formation and practice activities. I have also worked with children one on one in practicing and/or improving handwriting.
As a Kindergarten and first grade teacher, I have presented numerous phonics lessons. I have used the Saxon Phonics program as well as the Wilson Program. I was selected to model a phonics lesson to district staff. My work with ESOL students truly used phonics.
Reading is such an important academic subject. I have always brought literature into as many lessons as possible, as well as shared various stories with my students just for fun. I truly enjoy read-alouds and exposing children to reading as much as possible. I have worked one on one with many, many students in reading. With the use of various programs, students have been leveled and advanced well in time. I use numerous techniques to assist students in reading (based on my observations of the student and his/her strengths and weaknesses). I believe that a student should not only be reading books at a comfort level, but also those that give a challenge or the contrary. Listening to reading is another strategy that I have used for mastery. There are many routes you could take.
I have had experience teaching spelling along with phonics. My students were taught spelling words through patterns, rhymes, etc. I have also used the techniques of writing to help with spelling mastery. These all go hand in hand.
