I am a molecular biologist (Ph.D) with a strong background in genetics, microbiology, molecular virology, parasitology, and prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomics. I have been involved in teaching a number of different classes and workshops. I am co-author of two patents and 38 publications in scientific peer reviewed journals. Our team discovered the mouse flavivirus resistance gene, submitted to GenBank over 200 original DNA sequences, assembled the first draft of the whole genome sequence of the rat lungworm and found significant associations between several innate immunity genes and severity of flavivirus-induced diseases in humans.

I received my Ph.D. in Genetics from Institute of Cytology and Genetics of Russian Academy of Sciences in 1988. My thesis dealt with genetic differentiation of sympatric populations of two salmon species. After graduating, I spent six years as a Research Scientist at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics and five years as Staff Scientist in Department of Genetics at Texas Biomedical Research Institute. In 1998, I accepted the Research Associate position at Georgia State University and was promoted to Assistant Professor in the summer of 2000. During my scientific career, I published over 30 papers in genetic journals and supervised several graduate students.
