Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am a Georgia Tech Graduate and I have been teaching and tutoring "all subjects" on the SAT and ACT to hundreds of students for over thirty-five years with excellent results. Over the years, I have been able to assist first time students obtain high initial scores and dramatically improve scores for students re-taking the exams.

On another note, one of my strongest attributes is that I have an infinite amount of empathy, "patience", and determination with my students. I will not give up on a trying student. I may not be the least expensive tutor out there; however, I can assure you that I have many more years experience than your average tutor. I am semi-retired and tutor because I love teaching.

I also scored a 2380 out of 2400 (equivalent) on the SAT and 36 out of 36 on the ACT when I took the exams years ago.

Please also see my five-star ratings and testimonials from students and parents on my SAT/ACT tutoring effectiveness. I have a 4.94 star rating out of 5.00 stars.

On another note, with respect to the testimonial, I worked with one student for ten sessions and was able to increase his SAT English score by 220 points, his Critical Reading score by 270 points, and his Math score by 210 points to a total of 2110/2400.

With respect to the SAT and ACT, the exam is sixty to seventy percent knowledge based and thirty to forty percent depends on understanding exactly what and how the test makers have designed the test and tricks to solving problems on the exam.

I had an ACT student who on the last exam increased her score from a 15 to a 32 with eleven sessions. Now in all fairness she worked very very hard with me and between sessions on her vocabulary, math, etc.

I have been also been Certified by the Gwinnett, Fulton, Forsyth, Dekalb, and Cobb County Boards of Education as a Certified Tutor, and I have lived in the Alpharetta/Johns Creek area for over thirty years.

I look forward to helping your child get in the college of his choice!

ADD/ADHD

I have been tutoring special needs students on a paid and volunteer basis for over thirty-five years. It is quite challenging work. I have a B.S., M.B.A., and a Juris Doctorate in Law. I feel that with my conditions, dyslexia, ADHD, and speech related issues, etc. that I am uniquely qualified to tutor coping strategies for special needs children and young adults. I currently do volunteer work with Literacy Forsyth, and I have worked with Literacy Action in Atlanta in the past. I specialize in Reading and Writing Disorders: Types of learning disabilities include: reading disability (dyslexia), mathematics disability (dyscalculia) and writing disability (dysgraphia).

(I am Certified in Orton Gillingham and the Wilson Reading System, and The Interactive Reading System, multi-sensory methods).

I have tutored students and adults with the following "pre-diagnosed" disorders: mild Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, mild Autism, Bipolar Disorder (manic-depression), varied Cognitive Disorders, Communication and Speech Disorders, Obsessive Compulsion Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Malingering, and Impulse Control Disorder (ICD).

Aspergers

I have been tutoring and teaching students with Aspergers Syndrome for over thirty-five years with good success. I love this work and have an infinite amount of patience. I retired early to devote my life to students with mild to severe learning disabilities. I have completed post graduate work at The University of Miami and Harvard University where I have lectured on "Coping Techniques for Aspergers Syndrome".

Asperger also known as Asperger disorder is usally characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported.

If you have any questions about my methodology or how I teach specific coping strategies, please feel free to contact me. I will not quit with a willing student and caring parents.

Autism

I have been tutoring students and young adults with Autism for over thirty-five years. I have worked in conjunction with psychiatrists and other therapists to enhance the learning environment for students at several distinct levels of development. I have done post graduate work at The University of Miami and Harvard University where I have lectured on "The Challange of the Autism Spectrum, a Teaching Perspective".

Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restricted, repetitive or stereotyped behavior. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent before a child is three years old. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood.

I have an infinite amount of patience, empathy, determination, and I will not quit with a trying student with caring parents!

I have a B.S., M.B.A., and a Juris Doctorate in Law.

Dyslexia

I have obviously been able to overcome this disability and I feel that I am uniquely qualified to assist other students with this affliction. This condition never goes away completely; however, it can be managed with the right training and assistance. Without assistance, your average student will not be able to succeed to their greatest potential. I am also Certified in Orton Gillingham and Wilson Reading Systems together with the other multi-sensory methods including the Interactive Reading System. Types of learning disabilities taught include: reading disability (dyslexia), mathematics disability (dyscalculia) and writing disability (dysgraphia); I have tutored students and adults with the following pre-diagnosed disorders: mild Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, mild Autism, Bipolar Disorder (manic-depression), varied Cognitive Disorders, Communication and Speech Disorders, Obsessive Compulsion Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Malingering, and Impulse Control Disorder (ICD).

I have an infinite amount of patience, empathy, and I will not quit with a trying student!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught and tutored the following subjects in grades K-6th: English, reading, writing, math, science, social studies, history, geography, and study skills. I have taught in private schools and tutored home schooled students for over twenty-five years. I have B.S., M.S. and Doctorate degree. I enjoy tutoring and have made a part-time career of it. ESL/ESOL

I have been tutoring English as a Second Language for over twenty-five years with excellent results. I have taught students from over twenty countries on five continents.

Phonics

I have tutored and taught phonics, reading, English, grammar, and writing for over twenty-five years with excellent results. Phonics is an integral tool in teaching the English language. I have taught phonics to grammar school students, high school students, college students, and students learning English as a second language. I have taught phonics in private grammar and high schools, college level courses, adult education courses and seminars. I have taught English and phonics for Literacy Action in Atlanta, Georgia and Literacy Forsyth in Cumming, Georgia.

Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes—in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

The goal of phonics is to enable beginning readers to decode new written words by sounding them out, or in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns. Since it focuses on the spoken and written units within words, phonics is a sublexical approach and, as a result, is often contrasted with whole language, a word-level-up philosophy for teaching reading.

Since the turn of the 20th century phonics has been widely used in primary education and in teaching literacy throughout the English-speaking world.

If you have any questions about my teaching methods, etc., please email me.

Political Science

I have taught and tutored Political Science for thirty-five years. I enjoy teaching Political Science because it allows you to challenge students by allowing the students to learn a particular subject by analyzing the same subject matter from different perspectives both social and political. Political Science is critical to the public both from a world perspective and a domestic perspective. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Public Speaking

I practiced law for twenty years. I taught young lawyers to try cases.

Reading

I have been tutoring reading and writing disorders for over thirty-five years, I also specialize in more severe reading disorders like dyslexia and writing disorders like dysgraphia.

I have a B.S., M.B.A., and a Juris Doctorate in Law. I also suffer from dyslexia, which was diagnosed when I was in the first grade. I have obviously been able to overcome this disability and I feel that I am uniquely qualified to assist other students with this affliction. Social Studies

I am currently qualified by WyzAnt in Government and Politics. I have a B.S., M.B.A., and a Juris Doctorate in Law. I have tutored students in all levels of social studies from grammar school through high school. I firmly believe that a strong grip on the social sciences makes our students and adults more prepared to face and participate in some of the critical social issues of our time. The social sciences provide an excellent framework for determining which direction we should take as citizens of our great country. Without the social sciences, we cannot evaluate our success as human beings. I also teach a course at Emory University on Society and the Political Process.

Special Needs

I have been interested in and taught and tutored young students and adults with "Special Needs" for over thirty-five years with good success. I have tutored the following pre-diagnosed disorders: mild Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, mild Autism, Bipolar Disorder (manic-depression), varied Cognitive Disorders, Communication and Speech Disorders, Obsessive Compulsion Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Malingering, and Impulse Control Disorder (ICD).

I am also qualified in Reading and Writing Disorders: these disabilities include: reading disability (dyslexia), mathematics disability (dyscalculia) and writing disability (dysgraphia);I am Certified in Orton Gillingham and the Wilson Reading System, multi-sensory methods.

My educational experience includes post graduate work at The University of Miami and Harvard University where I have lectured on "Special Needs Education and the Fight for Federal Funding".

I have an infinite amount of patience, empathy, and I will not quit with a trying student with caring parents!

Speech

I am currently qualified in over fifteen subjects with WyzAnt. I have a B.S., M.B.A., and a Juris Doctorate in Law. When I first started to speak as a child, and throughout grammar school, I suffered from stuttering and other speech related issues. Determined to overcome my affliction, I went on to become our school's Debate Club President and win the State of Georgia High School Championship, and later I debated for our team at Georgia Tech. With the proper guidance and assistance, I went on to give the Graduation Speech in my high school and ultimately on to practice as a trial lawyer who taught continuing education courses to younger lawyers on how to conduct oral arguments in court.

I have worked directly for a licensed speech therapist here in the Atlanta area for over fifteen years. I have done volunteer work for Literacy Action in Atlanta, Georgia, and Literacy Forsyth in Cumming, Georgia, for over thirty years. Speech therapy focuses on receptive language, or the ability to understand words spoken to you, and expressive language, or the ability to use words to express yourself. It also deals with the mechanics of producing words, such as articulation, pitch, fluency, and volume. Adults may need speech therapy after a stroke or traumatic accident that changes their ability to use language; for children, it generally involves pursuing milestones that have been delayed. Some children only need help with language, others have the most problems with the mechanics of speech, and some need every kind of speech help there is available. Over the years, I have tutored students who have gone on to become debate champions, students recovering from neurological issues, trial lawyers, and business professionals who need assistance in their job performance where oral presentations are necessary, etc. I enjoy this work because it is very rewarding to both the student and the teacher. If you have any questions about my approach and methods, please feel free to email me at any time.

Study Skills

I have been tutoring for over thirty-five years with excellent results. I am currently certified by WyzAnt in over fifteen subjects. I have the following degrees: B.S., M.B.A., and a J.D. I have also taught at the college level at Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, the University of Miami, Florida International University and Emory University. I have also taught Grammar and High school students in study skills and scholastic organization classes. Thank you for your consideration.

I implement a very straight forward set of study and organizational tools with every student. With a little bit of tweaking this method will serve students from elementary school through college; allowing them to utilize one system that is very effective at all levels. It very effectively eliminates the endless problems associated with finding and organizing materials, maintaining schedules, etc. It's not "rocket science", it's just a system that works, can easily be reviewed by a parent, tutor, or teacher, and helps eliminate that panic of not being able to locate an assignment the night before it is due. If the student will stick with the system it works.

Writing

I have tutored students in writing skills from basic writing to more severe issues like dysgraphia, a dyslexic like disability that makes writing difficult. I also teach Technical Writing and Industrial Engineering in the mornings and tutor in the afternoon. I have taught writers from five year-olds to students writing their doctorial theses and attorneys writing court documents.

I have a B.S., M.B.A., and a Juris Doctorate in Law. I also suffer from dyslexia, which was diagnosed when I was in the first grade. I have obviously been able to overcome this disability and I feel that I am uniquely qualified to assist other students with this affliction.
