My name is Megan, and I recently graduated magna cum laude from the University of Washington in Seattle, with a BA in English Language and Literature.

I have been reading extensively and writing creatively since I was a little girl, and am excited about helping students learn to master the requested subjects. I have ten years of after school babysitting/tutoring experience, as well as more than four years as a full-time nanny, so I would be an ideal tutor for young children. I excel in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, etc., but am also highly proficient in math, history, science and creative arts.

I am willing to travel, have reliable transportation and a clean driving record, and will provide a letter of recommendation and impeccable references upon request.

Vocabulary

As an avid reader, I am am always looking to expand my vocabulary. I not only have an advanced vocabulary of my own, but know a variety of tricks to help with remembering words/associating words with definitions.

Grammar

With a meticulous eye for detail and a penchant for perfectionism in this department, I am a skilled grammar tutor. I have edited for authors, e-zines and my high school yearbook and newspaper. I know grammatical rules automatically, and would love to help others acquire this ability as well!

Reading

Reading, analysis and comprehension are some of my strongest skills, and I have learned that knowing what to look for, understanding cues and employing certain techniques are the best way to increase reading skills, whether in phonics, comprehension, analysis or extraction.

Writing

Writing has always been one of my greatest strengths, and I am enthusiastic about helping others learn to do it well! I am skilled in almost any form of writing, including: essays, technical, creative/poetry, narrative, research and persuasive.

English

English Language and Literature was my college major, and I not only excel in it, but also enjoy it. I am well-versed in writing, reading, comprehension, vocabulary, literature, grammar and all that the academic term "English" encompasses.

Literature

I started reading authors like Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Shakespeare and Ray Bradbury when I was in elementary school, and have continued adding to the list ever since. As an English Language and Literature major, I studied American, British, African and African American literature, among others. If necessary for tutoring, I am willing to read any books that I have not (i.e., to assist with comprehension, writing a report, etc.).

Proofreading

I was the youngest and most inexperienced student ever allowed to write for my high school newspaper, and became its Editor-in-Chief the next year. Though my initial acceptance occurred because of my writing, my meticulous and impeccable proofreading skills propelled my leadership success. I have volunteered as an ElderFriends editor, have edited e-zines and have a solid portfolio of papers I've edited for graduate students (Law and Medicine).

SAT Reading

I received a near-perfect Reading score on my own SAT, and excel in both comprehension and analysis.

SAT Writing

I received a perfect score on the writing section of my SAT, and have extensive writing experience as well as standardized test-taking knowledge.

Spelling

As an avid reader and writer, spelling has always been a top priority for me. I will be happy to teach a variety of tips and tricks for remembering how to spell words, especially the tricky ones!

ACT Reading

While I did not take the ACT, I received a near-perfect score on the SAT Reading section and will be glad to help students do the same on the ACT. I understand the differences between the tests, and can help students by increasing the various strength each exam requires.

ACT English

While I did not personally take the ACT, I received a perfect score on the SAT Writing section, and a near-perfect score on the Reading section. I know the differences between the two tests, and can help students increase their strengths and weaknesses in order to succeed at either or both, especially in the English section.

Elementary Math

As an elementary school student, I captained a math problem-solving team that won second place in our state competition, excelled in mental math and always did well at remembering not just the formulas, but the why and how they worked. I continued math all the way through advanced calculus as a high school senior, and would love to help students get on the same track--one where math can help them succeed, rather than weigh them down.

Elementary Science

I excel at teaching elementary subjects because I believe that enthusiasm for a subject can play the biggest role in success, and I am very good at creating enthusiasm with children who feel put off or discouraged/intimidated by certain subjects.

Study Skills

As a high school student who maintained a 4.0, worked, volunteered and held leadership and membership positions in various organizations, I discovered and experimented with a variety of study skills. As a university student simultaneously working both full and part-time jobs while attending college full time, I perfected them. I will gladly pass on these skills, and help assess which skills do or don't work for each individual I tutor.
