I am a certified teacher (Elementary, P-5 & Special Education, P-12) with 6 years of experience teaching students in grades K-5. For the past 3 years, I have also tutored students in grades 1-8. Working with a student one-on-one gives me the opportunity to learn about his or her overall understanding and attitude towards learning, as well as his or her current skill level in a given subject. Using this knowledge, a little humor, and a variety of teaching strategies can go a long way to reach a student who is feeling overwhelmed or frustrated.

Every student deserves to experience the joy and confidence that comes with mastering a challenging skill. I strive to meet each student where he or she is, and provide the direction and support needed to move forward from there.

Depending on each student's needs, my math lessons may include previewing, review of difficult concepts and skills, targeted practice to reinforce skills, and test-taking strategies. For me, the best part of tutoring is learning about a student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and developing lesson plans that consider both. Phonics

I have training and experience in the Fundations and LANGUAGE! instructional programs. Fundations provides a systematic and multi-sensory approach to teaching phonics and (to some extent) grammar. LANGUAGE! is a comprehensive program for grades 5+, which covers reading, writing, and language skills.

Study Skills

As an after school tutor, I incorporated study and test-taking skills into each lesson. I have also worked 1:1 with students who have "given up". We discuss skills and habits which did not work, and consider alternatives.

Special Needs

As a special education teacher, I have had the pleasure of teaching students with a variety of diagnoses, including SDD, LD, ADHD, ODD, MID, and ASD. I have working knowledge of the IEP process, and am familiar with psycho-educational assessments and strategies to address identified learning deficits.

ADD/ADHD

In my 6 years of teaching and tutoring special education students, I have had the chance to work with a variety of students diagnosed with ADHD.
