I am a certified teacher (Elementary, P-5 & Special Education, P-12) with 6 years of experience teaching students in grades K-5. For the past 3 years, I have also tutored students in grades 1-8. Working with a student one-on-one gives me the opportunity to learn about his or her overall understanding and attitude towards learning, as well as his or her current skill level in a given subject. Using this knowledge, a little humor, and a variety of teaching strategies can go a long way to reach a student who is feeling overwhelmed or frustrated.
Every student deserves to experience the joy and confidence that comes with mastering a challenging skill. I strive to meet each student where he or she is, and provide the direction and support needed to move forward from there.
Please let me know if you would like to discuss my qualifications in more detail.
I would welcome the opportunity to learn more about your child and his or her academic needs.
In my 6 years of teaching and tutoring special education students, I have had the chance to work with a variety of students diagnosed with ADHD. These bright students faced varying degrees of difficulty with attention, focus, and/or impulse control, and required individualized strategies to help them meet their academic potential. My role as tutor includes filling in gaps resulting from poor attention during lessons, and providing kind and firm support for behaviors that support learning. I teach and reinforce academic concepts and skills, as well as good study and work habits.
I have a Teaching Certificate in SpEd General Curriculum Consultative. I have completed Exceptional Students course. I've had six (6) years of teaching experience, including resource room and inclusion settings. During this time, I have served several students with diagnoses on the Autism Spectrum.
I hold teaching certification in Elementary Education and Special Education, and have completed training in a variety of specialized instruction programs, including ENGLISH! and Wilson's Fundations. I am certified in Orton-Gillingham methodology, a multi-sensory approach to teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling and reading comprehension which was specifically developed to address the needs of students with dyslexia. My teaching and tutoring experience includes working with students whose reading skills are significantly below grade level.
I have six (6) years of teaching experience, including small group Reading/Language Arts/Math Grades K-5, and inclusion Grades 3-5. During this time, I used specialized programs for phonics, reading, writing, and math to help students who were performing below grade-level. I incorporate related strategies and exercises into my tutoring sessions. My favorite part of tutoring is learning about a student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and developing lesson plans that consider both. I follow my students' teacher blogs and newsletters (if provided) to help prepare for sessions and provide relevant feedback to parents.
Depending on each student's needs, my math lessons may include previewing, review of difficult concepts and skills, targeted practice to reinforce skills, and test-taking strategies. For me, the best part of tutoring is learning about a student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and developing lesson plans that consider both. For math, this sometimes includes the use of games or other activities as part of the lesson.
The tutor will provide a comprehensive approach to English\Language Arts skills, including grammar, writing, vocabulary and spelling. Students not only learn the "rules" of our language, but are also shown connections for how skills are applied across the curriculum.
Depending on the student's age and academic level, grammar lessons may include the use of sentence diagrams and other graphic organizers, games, flash cards, or other activities. The best part of tutoring is learning about a student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and developing lesson plans that consider both.
As a special education teacher, I have helped students improve their reading skills using various specialized instruction programs, including Fundations and LANGUAGE!. I am also certified in Orton-Gillingham methodology, which is a comprehensive and multi-sensory approach to teaching phonics, spelling, and reading comprehension. My tutoring services include skills assessment, systematic beginning phonics instruction, remedial instruction in phonics and spelling rules, and explicit instruction in applying reading comprehension strategies.
I have dual certification in elementary and special education, and have tutored students privately for the past 6 years. I am also certified in Orton-Gillingham methodology, and use multi-sensory strategies to provide explicit instruction in phonics, spelling, and reading comprehension to my students.
As a special education teacher, I have had the pleasure of teaching students with a variety of diagnoses, including SDD, LD, ADHD, ODD, MID, and ASD. I have working knowledge of the IEP process, and am familiar with psycho-educational assessments and strategies to address identified learning deficits.
As a special education teacher, I have had the opportunity to use a variety of specialized programs for reading, writing, and grammar to help students who were performing below grade-level. I now utilize related strategies and exercises to develop lesson plans for my tutoring students. Depending on the student's age and academic level, spelling lessons may include review of phonics rules, the use of graphic organizers, games, flash cards, or other activities. I also follow my students' teacher blogs and newsletters (if provided) to help prepare for sessions and provide relevant feedback to parents.
As an after school tutor, I incorporated study and test-taking skills into each lesson. I have also worked 1:1 with students who have "given up". We discuss skills and habits which did not work, and consider alternatives.
Depending on the student's age and academic level, vocabulary lessons may include the use of graphic organizers, games, flash cards, or other activities. The best part of tutoring is learning about a student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and developing lesson plans that consider both.
I utilize topics of interest to each student in my writing lesson plans, which emphasize all steps in the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). Writing skills are taught through teacher modeling, conferencing, and student review of writing samples, to help students improve the quality of their ideas, organization, and conventions (e.g. grammar, punctuation, capitalization).
I also follow my students' teacher blogs and newsletters (if provided) to help prepare for sessions and to provide relevant feedback to parents.
