I have a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of South Florida, and I am currently working on my Masters in Transportation Engineering. I have tutored for several years, from young children to college level. My primary focus is mathematics, from elementary to college level and test preparation. For me, the greatest sense of accomplishment comes when a student has struggled with a concept and then it finally "clicks."
By focusing in mathematics, my students get the most out of each lesson, by having the ability to relate a more advanced concept to an earlier concept. I use many of these concepts still in my Masters level studies. Math is a subject that builds on itself, and sometimes at a fast rate. And I find many students forget some of the basics simply because they haven't used them. You simply cannot just read about a concept and understand. You must do it. Working on problems is the best way to excel in math. The more you practice the easier it will be. Don't believe me, just try it.
I like to know my students, their likes and hobbies. It helps create a lesson specifically for each student. By seeing how math relates to what they enjoy, students are more likely to retain the topics covered in the lesson.
In addition to reinforcing curriculum, I can help you develop test taking strategies so you excel. Standardized test makers know the common mistakes students make and exploit that on tests. Have you ever walked out of a test thinking you did great, and when you get the results back, it is less than you thought? Just because you get one of the answers in a multiple choice problem, doesn't mean it is the correct one. I can work with you or your child on the best approach to each type of problem.
Whatever your goal, short or long term, I want you to achieve it.
