In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher in Wisconsin and Florida and have taught at all grade levels from elementary through college. I have a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wisconsin and I can make learning fun and respectful of varied learning styles. I have two grown children and 5 grandchildren and am comfortable teaching any age child.

English

I have a keen interest in language and language learning and a strong proficiency in the English language, vocabulary-wise and grammar-wise. I am a published author and appreciate good literature.

ESL/ESOL

I have had extensive experience teaching language as a second language. My thesis for my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction dealt with second language learning and the issues related to it. I am creative and able to understand the pitfalls of learning English, so as to simplify it for learning.

French

I hold a Bachelor's degree in French and Spanish Education and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin. I have successfully taught French for many years in Wisconsin from small children through eighth grade. I tutored French at all levels at the UW-Madison for 10 years. I love the language and feel confident that I can teach it well.

Grammar

I have an exceptionally strong understanding of grammar, made even stronger by the foreign languages which I speak.

Phonics

Phonics is a part of language which I have studied extensively in Spanish and French and have taught for many years. I understand English phonics as well and have taught it in comparison to those of other languages, thus strengthening my knowledge of English phonics.

Proofreading

I tutored at the University of Wisconsin for 10 years and did an exorbitant amount of proofreading, in English, Spanish and French. I am meticulous and knowledgeable in the area of good writing.

Public Speaking

As a teacher, I have been doing public speaking my entire life. I can help a student to develop his/her skills in this area.

Reading

As a teacher I have received numerous hours of service related to reading in curricular areas. I feel comfortable helping anyone with reading.

Spanish

I hold a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin in Spanish and French Education. I am fluent in Spanish and began learning it when I was 7 years old. I have taught it for over 30 years at all levels from elementary through college.

Speech

I have a good ear for dialectical difference and a strength in language learning. I have studied numerous languages throughout my life. This has given me expertise in oral speech for those wanting to speak English with less accent. As far as speech giving, I have, as a teacher, and leader in my school, given numerous speeches and taught my students the rudiments of a good speech. I feel confident that both facets of speech, be it enunciation or speaking to an audience, are areas where I, as a language educator, have expertise.

Spelling

I am a strong speller and I am able to help people improve their spelling by teaching them the patterns of the language.

TOEFL

I have an in-depth understanding of language learning and excellent English skills. I am a dedicated teacher who can explain language in a clear and concise manner. My Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction as well as my more than 30 years of teaching foreign language have prepared me to be an efficient, helpful tutor.

Track & Field

I have coached high school boys track and field, along with my husband, who has 40 years experience in the sport. He taught me a lot and I was successful coaching high jump and hurdles, along with other events.

Vocabulary

My vocabulary is strong from reading and a passion for words.

Writing

I love to write and am currently writing a book. I have published a book previously and numerous articles as well. When I taught, I taught my students how to write, albeit in a foreign language. I also helped college students with writing when I tutored at the University of Wisconsin.

Wished I would have known about her earlier in the year!!! — First tutoring session was a great experience for my son. She is patient, fun, and most importantly helps place the learning perspective at a different level. My son liked her so much he said that Suzanne could probably teach him everything he knew so far if he met with her for a week, which is a testimony in itself. Great lady and a great find. Looking forward to his results from tests this week ...
