As a medic in the Army and a near-graduate (one summer class left!) in Biology, I've lived and breathed it for the past several years. I retain information well and relay thoughts and ideas clearly to others, which is something I do as both a medic and Sunday School teacher, so my experience is fairly broad. I've taught everything from how caffeine works with adenosine receptors, to The Parable of the Sower, to how to give aid to a severe trauma victim. People tell me that I'm friendly and a good-listener, and I'm very well-spoken, well-written, and professional in the workplace.
I normally start by identifying issues regarding the material. Finding the source of the problem usually leads to a quick fix. If the problem is conceptual, I break the material down into its most basic form, usually using metaphors and analogies to relate abstract concepts to real life situations and objects (i.e. the Golgi complex being like a cell's "mail room"). After instruction, I test the student's retention through either testing from book material or asking review questions, identifying areas that need improvement or concepts that were less understood. I've taught people at a fifth-grade reading level how to use an EKG machine and what the lines mean, if that's an indicator of my skills.
I'm also a history buff, I write novels and short stories (and am in the processing of publishing two), and I do freelance artwork, drawing semi-realism figures and landscapes and negative-space color work.
I got near perfect scores on the ASVAB when I entered the Army in 2006. It gave me the opportunity to pick any job I wanted, and I received a $20k bonus for doing so.
I've been tutoring for the ASVAB since 2007 with concentrations in math, science, and English/reading comprehension. I've helped many people achieve success on the ASVAB who would have otherwise failed or done poorly.
I've been a Christian for the past 11 years and have been involved in one ministry or another fairly consistently ever since. I am one of the older members of the Wesley Student Ministry at North Georgia and teach children at Browns Bridge in Forsyth County. If asked, I can provide references from several ministries. It'd be wrong of me to blow my own horn when talking about Christianity (how 'bout that humility?), so I'll let the pastors be open and honest about who I am.
I graduated with a Bachelor's in Biology from UNG in 2012 and have more than ten years of tutoring experience in both human and animal sciences, with a concentration in anatomy and physiology.
I was also a medic in the Army for eight years and taught classes annually to hundreds of soldiers according to prescribed standards for both practical and clinical applications.
I have experience in both lesson planning and implementation, and am able to convey complex material in a format friendly to those who read below an eighth-grade level.
I've been a professional, published writer for six years with a large body of work, and am the lead writer at an independent game developer specializing in text-based games. I've written fiction, historical non-fiction, self-help books, and a biography for an heiress of the Coca-Cola company.
My proficiency in Microbiology is on the medical side, so I know the difference between a vector and a fomite and have a background in Immunology that lets me explain the difference between IgG and IgM. I have a strong understanding of biology at the cell level and lower and can reasonably explain the differences between bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, along with their habitats, different classes (halophiles v thermophiles, etc) and how they are promoted/inhibited.
Of the 6.5 years I've been in the Army, 5.5 of them have been spent as a medic. Fitness and Nutrition are essentially my job description. I cook all my own food from scratch, take great care of myself, and understand genetic and habitat risk factors that can damage health, as well as the benefits of various nutrients and supplements. I'm skeptical of miracle diets, fad fitness, and most holistic 'medicines', and my knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology has allowed me to share a great deal about the way the body uses and reacts to different nutrients and substances.
Every year, I have to get up in front of 70 or so people and explain to them how to stop someone from dying, implementing my own immediate knowledge, presentation material, collected data, video/audio, and prepared talking points. Beyond that, I have one year of formal education in public speaking, so I can teach the five basic components, from AGD to end statement, and can help the speaker formulate a speech based on the audience, subject matter, and intent of the speech. I also know several tricks to alleviate nervousness and concentrate on the speech itself. Confidence, combined with good rhetoric and smooth body language can make a speech very effective.
As a biologist, I've had to take Zoology as a class and elected to take Stream Ecology, Entomology, and standard Ecology to broaden my scope. I'm knowledgeable on the system we use for classification, as well as identifying features of many clades. My most recent concentration was Arthropoda, but I can tell you what separates Mollusca from Cnidaria, and that from Porifera (brains and nerves). I can also help relate valuable tools for remembering clade names and identifying parts of an animal's body, especially "identifying characteristics", which is how we tell them apart from other creatures.
