I have a B.A. in Speech and Communications and a Masters Degree in Speech and Language. I especially love working with special needs children with learning disabilities and language deficits. I have experience in assessment and therapy for Articulation, Language, Autism, and Dyslexia for children and adults. During my tenure with the Palm Beach School District I was able to assist many middle school students with special needs to complete their IEP goals and be mainstreamed to regular classes.

My philosophy for working with young children is that learning strategies are most effective when they are interactive and fun. I have been trained to use auditory, visual, tactile/kinesthetic strategies as well as adult learning concepts.

Prior to becoming a tutor with WyzAnt, I have been engaged in training professionals in technical writing skills and computers, including Microsoft Word, Publisher and PowerPoint. I also tutor phonics, grammar, public speaking, reading comprehension, written expression, study skills, the HESI, NLN, TEAS, SAT, ACT, ASVAB and other eligibility examinations.

During my tenure with WyzAnt, I have been assisting students with their preparation for the Florida State Licensing Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX). In addition, I have especially enjoined teaching English as a Second Language to non-native English speakers. Some of my students have been native speakers of Spanish, Portuguese and Swedish.

It is a privilege to teach. I believe there is no better way to serve your fellow man than to help someone learn something that will enable them to have a better life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My English preparation program for the ACT includes an initial assessment to determine the specific areas that are most challenging for the ACT candidate. Once this determination has been made a program is developed that includes review of all of the under developed areas as noted in the evaluation. In addition grammar, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, identifying, critical analysis and interpretation of different literary genre as well are included. The development of an outline for writing a narrative from a writing prompt is a vital part of this program and is based on the writing criteria published for the ACT.

ACT Reading

I have a Master's Degree in Speech and Language. My training and experience have enabled me to develop very specific skills in teaching reading comprehension from a linguistic basis. I have been teaching reading and related language decoding skills to children and adults for more than 20 years. Specifically, I have taught high school reading and language arts programs in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and here in Florida. I have also been teaching advanced reading comprehension skills to college students here in Florida for the past 10 years.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with students diagnosed as ADD/ADHD for more than 20 years. As a speech and language professional, I have also been involved in writing as well as implementing their Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and/or Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) for children under three years of age. In addition, I have also been involved in developing behavioral curriculum in order to create stress free environments for children with such diagnosis in an effort to increase opportunities for them to engage in pre-reading/pre-math and reading, math and language activities with other children their own age.

Aspergers

I have a Master's in Speech and Language Pathology. I have worked with children and adults with a variety of neurologically based learning disabilities for more than 30 years. As a result, I have experienced working with children diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome before the teaching profession had identified clinically proven activities for dealing with the behaviors that manifest as a result of the syndrome. Many of the techniques used to teach children with other learning disabilities can be manipulated effectively to give these children the support they need to acquire excellent reading, language and social skills. Over the years, I have developed my own techniques, such as scaffolding for visual learners that have proven highly effective, especially in teaching reading.

Bible Studies

I was the Director of Sunday School for the Greater Mt. Sinai Church, West Palm Beach Florida and Adult Sunday School Teacher for 5 years. I was also the Director of Education for the Women of Excellence for the same faith based facility for 5 years. I have written and taught biblical studies for women, children and the general population over the past 13 years and am currently a member of the Bishop's Council of the United Fellowship of Churches, Inc. As the Executive Secretary of this organization, it is my responsibility to write articles on Christian education, apologetics, and a variety of biblical studies for the UFC publications and website.

Business

I have owned and operated two different businesses during my career. I started a fashion design business with a $500 loan from my retirement fund. At the time I worked as a school teacher and had the summers off. With 2 young daughters at home, I really didn't want to commit to a 9-5 job during the summer months, so I thought I could do something part time with another skill I had refined over the years. I purchased various cuts of fabric, threads and sewing notions. Fortunately, since I had been sewing since I was a teenager, I already owned a straight stitch and a 4-thread serger. I cleared my family room, confiscated by husband's pool table as a cutting table and scheduled my work time from 6:00AM to 12PM for cutting, sewing and fitting garments and again from 9PM to 11PM when I conducted finishing and administrative duties like inventory, planning, designing and accounting. In just a few weeks I had about 25 outfits completed. I recruited 8 of my close friends, one of which had modeled for several years in Milan, Italy, to model the garments. I selected a date, invited more friends, acquaintances and anyone who would listen and held a fashion show to introduce my designs. I was consequently invited to speak at a local women's conference and show more of my work. "In the Spirit Designs" was born from these meager beginnings. This company operated for about 10 years but was put to rest do to personal life changes. However, it was revived again in 1995 when I migrated to Freeport, Bahamas. During stay there, I also started a plumbing supply import-export business for contractors. This was purely by accident, as I traveled to the US monthly to secure fabrics, etc. for my business. One of my friends who was in the contracting business asked me to do some research on plumbing and electrical suppliers while in the States. Even though I knew nothing about plumbing, electrical or building contract work, I knew how to negotiate and was able to close a $200,000 contract on the my first attempt. I also knew how to set up a business, develop a business plan, secure funding, keep records and see to the day to day operations of managing a flourishing operation. I continued with the organization for several years even after I returned to the U.S. to live.

Currently, I am operating my tutoring business, contracting with WyzAnt as well as private clients. Over the years, I have helped students, friends, acquaintances and others start their own businesses, assist them with securing funding, training staff, writing training and technical manuals and developing policies and procedures for the day to day operations of their companies. I have worked with one-person operations as well as companies with 200-300 employees, with budgets from $20,000 to $2,000,000 annually.

Cosmetology

I am a licensed cosmetologist with thirty years of experience. I also have my supervisory certificate which allows me to oversee the set up of a new salon and supervision of students who are interning at a salon in preparation for taking the license exam. I have tutored many students in preparation for the licensing exam in various states. Even those students who have unsuccessfully taken the exam have been able to accomplish their goal after tutoring with me for a very short time. My tutoring techniques include study skills, test-taking strategies and content knowledge development that is built on a strong foundation of infection control, state rules and regulations, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, study of skin, and best salon business practices.

Dyslexia

I have taught children diagnosed with Dyslexia from ages 6 through high school in the Camden, New Jersey School District from 1979 through 1995. In addition, I have taught dyslexic students in the Palm Beach County, FL School District who were enrolled in the Adolescent Language Program from 1995 through 1998. I have also tutored college degree candidates who are diagnosed dyslexic in an effort to assist them with achieving passing scores for college entrance exams such as the SAT, ACT and TEAS. I am currently working with two students, both of whom are dyslexic along with language and other learning dysfunctions that hinder their academic progress.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught K-6 for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for 5 years; the Camden New Jersey School System for 10 years and 6th grade in Palm Beach County, Florida for 3 years. During those experiences, I developed curriculum for special needs children who had not been diagnosed and provided assistance to keep them on track with the regular classroom material. I taught social studies, science, math, language arts as well as helped them with special projects that required research beyond the classroom. I sphere headed a literacy program that focused on vocabulary development and reading comprehension for elementary boys using comic books and short stories about super heroes to get them engaged and keep them motivated while learning.

English

My English program includes an initial assessment to identify specific areas of challenge for the client. Once this has been analyzed a program is developed to meet the needs of the individual. Areas of tutoring include phonics/phonetics, grammar, writing, vocabulary development, literature and reading comprehension. A strong foundation in the encoding and decoding of one's native language is essential to being successful in the attainment of knowledge in other subject areas, including the acquisition of another language. I often incorporate material from specific subject areas that may be challenging to the student as part of the overall tutoring program. For instance, if the student is struggling in the area of science and also has difficulty with verb tense, reading material from the specific are of science the person is studying is used to enhance vocabulary develop, work on verb tense and study scientific concepts.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's Degree in Speech and Language from Trenton State College. I am currently teaching English as a Second Language to a native Portuguese speaker. In addition, I have taught ESL to native Swedish speakers in the past year. I have taught ESL to native Spanish speakers ranging from ages 3 to adult during my professional experience. I am also certified to administer certain language assessments to young children who are native Spanish speakers to determine their level of proficiency in English.

Grammar

My program for teaching grammar includes a variety of techniques. With young children, who are just learning sentence structure, as well as developing their vocabulary I include games and activities that are fun and interesting. We also use various computer generated materials that are engaging and allow children to progress at their own pace. Each client is given an initial assessment in order to determine what skills are already in place and where we need to begin.

For adults who are interested in improving their writing skills for employment purposes or perhaps are returning to school and need to write essays, reports and term papers, I always teach the rules for using the different types of punctuation, review the parts of speech, tense, types of sentences and basic sentence structure to ensure they have all of the foundational information to produce grammatically correct English language materials.

IELTS

I have taught English as a Second Language for many years. My background is in speech and language. This gives me a unique ability to help students understand and produce the phonemes in the English language in the appropriate manner. I also compare the linguistic differences in the students native language with English to help them understand the various rules of English grammar versus the rules of their native language. I include all of the aspects of the IELTS test sections in my tutoring program and offer my students frequent opportunities to take mock IELTS exams to help them become familiar with the testing situation.

If a student has already taken the IELTS, I use their previous information to analyze the test taking skills as well as their proficiency in the various sections of the test. This information is used to help them focus on specifically challenging areas in order to improve their scores where needed.

Microsoft Publisher

I use Publisher to prepare a variety of publications for my church, including weekly church programs, postcards, posters, banners and newsletters for marketing purposes. I also use this program to design and publish a magazine, handbooks and other documents used in teaching biblical studies, programs for conferences, conventions and revivals. I recently started using Publisher to design forms to collect data and maintain information for our Ministry of Helps.

NCLEX

I have a Master's Degree in Speech and Language. As such much of my training required courses in biology and chemistry as it relates to functions of the neurological system, muscular system and other bodily functions that relate to brain functions. Prior to retiring from my position as Supervisor of Early Head Start, I was responsible for the day to day operations of providing a holistic program of education, health and welfare for children birth to 3 and their families. Part of these responsibilities including supervising a pediatric nurse. I had to review many medical records, reports and keep abreast of health issues for children and pregnant women. In addition, I spent the last year proctoring exams for students who were studying to take the TEAS. As a result of this experience I started tutoring students and was referred by the Director of Nursing at a local college to coach a group of students sitting for the NCLEX. It was a great success. All of my students passed the first time.

Nursing

I have been working with nursing students helping them to prepare to take the State Licensing Exam (NCLEX) for the past several years. Most of my students have come to me after having taken the test at least once and failed. I have been able to help them organize their study program to improve their retention of information as well as coach them in areas of information that have been especially challenging for them. I also continually review the test material to make sure my students have the most up-to-date information on the test focus areas.

Phonics

I have a Master's Degree is Speech and Language and am thoroughly trained in teaching English through phonics and phonetic fundamentals. I have been teaching children and adults using phonics for more than 20 years. In addition, I have developed curriculum to teach phonics to preschoolers, elementary, middle and high school aged children with special needs in language and articulation and adults who are learning English as a second language. I have also trained other teachers to administer phonetic assessments and to implement phonetic curriculae.

Public Speaking

As a Missionary licensed by the United Fellowship of Churches, Inc., I preach the gospel at various churches and faith based events as invited. Prior to my induction into the ministry, I conducted train-the-trainer workshops for Palm Beach County Head Start for nine (9) years, wherein I taught early childhood professionals the art of conducting oral presentations on teaching techniques they developed in their classrooms to their peers. I have also made a variety of presentations at Head Start training events in the county, Atlanta and Detroit at their National Conferences.

Religion

I am a licensed Missionary with the United Fellowship of Churches, Inc. I also currently host an Internet Radio program, "Learning to Worship Him," where I teach a half-hour bible study each week. I was previously the Director of Education for Women at my church for four years, as well as the past Sunday School Director, adult bible study and teen bible study teacher. I have also taught life application classes in spirituality to teens.

SAT Reading

My program for teaching SAT reading includes a review of all of the different types of genre, identifying the main idea or author's purpose, differentiating between the main idea or thematic statement and supporting ideas; as well as, making inferences, detecting the author's tone and style, applying key statements to similar situations or ideas, determining relationships between different parts of a passage and taking information from other sources and finding how it influences what is written in the target passage. I provide extensive work in the area of vocabulary development, including synonyms, antonyms, and word analogies. All aspects of grammar are also an integral part of the SAT test preparation program which includes identifying parts of speech, different sentence structures, and punctuation.

SAT Writing

My program for SAT writing includes vocabulary development, use of synonyms and antonyms; sentence structure, grammatical usage, and punctuation; organization including paragraphing, logical flow and structure; and how to develop content using examples and reasoning. I also review essay formats and extensive reading comprehension to expose the student to a variety of materials. This provides the student with enhanced knowledge of a variety of subjects that could possibly be selected for the prompt and assignment for the essay.

Sewing

I currently operate In the Spirit Designs which designs and constructs garments for the clergy. Garments include chimeres, cassocks, stoles, copes and mitres, as well as various custom designed jackets, suits and dresses for ladies. In the past, I was partner in a company called Creative Impulses. I was the head designer. We designed off the rack and custom made high end sportswear for women. I have also traded my designs at well renowned craft exhibits such as the Delray Affair, the Baptist Convention, United Fellowship of Churches Annual State Convention and numerous other craft shows and exhibits around the country.

Social Studies

As a teacher in the various school districts in which I have taught over the past 30 years, I have worked with many students who were experiencing reading problems. Many of the students came to me with work in Social Studies, more recently called Civics. Although their main challenge was reading comprehension, I was required to teach the concepts of social studies in order to assist them to complete homework assignments as well as writing essays and term papers. More recently, I have been assisting college students with term papers in government, sociology, politics, and justice. This has required extensive historical and current research in these subjects.

Also, as part of my own college experience, I was required to take several courses in sociology and government. In addition, as Education Coordinator for the United Fellowship of Churches, Inc. it has become by duty to develop and implement educational programs on voting rights, the political system and national government issues, and state and local government issues that effect the rights and responsibilities of affiliate members and their congregations.

Special Needs

I have a Master's Degree in Speech and Language. I worked for more than 20 years prior to coming to Florida with Special Needs children from birth to high school age. I wrote the proposal and implemented the program in the Camden, New Jersey School District for mobilized units that conducted early assessment for preschool age children to determine their need for intervention and ultimately a successful school experience. This pilot program was later dubbed "Child Find" nationally. Upon arrival in Florida, I operated the Adolescent Language Program (ALP) in the Palm Beach County School District for 3 years before moving into the Child Care arena.

Speech

I have a Master's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology and have worked as a Speech and Language Therapist with children and adults in schools, hospitals and private settings for more than 30 years. My work has included articulation therapy, language development and remediation with learning disabilities, autism, hearing impaired and stuttering. I have also worked with brain injuries and stroke patients.

SSAT

My test-taking program for all entrance exams involves review of the following academic skills: vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and the ability to relate ideas logically, including synonyms and analogies; reading comprehension of short passages and answering questions about that passage.

My writing program teaches the student to express their thoughts from written, verbal and/or picture prompts. They are taught how to develop a outline to develop their written narrative and to include an introduction, the topic sentence, detailed supporting sentences, and a conclusion, while using appropriate grammar. Preparation for the SSAT also includes review of math concepts such as word problems, umber problems, concepts and operations, algebra and Geometry. Each students needs are assessed and a program developed to meet their special challenges.

Study Skills

Since I first started teaching back in 1977, I have always incorporated teaching study skills to my students. Getting organized, prioritizing subject matter and developing a focused plan for study is foundational for academic success at every level. So regardless to whether I am teaching language arts, science, social studies or math the first thing I teach is getting a system that meets each students individual needs. Learning how to study is almost is equally as important as learning the material.

TEAS

I have been teaching the different areas of the TEAS exam to students for several years. I first became interested in this area as a monitor for another nursing eligibility exam. Many of the local colleges that have nursing programs use the TEAS exam to determine eligibility for their nursing candidates. The English, Math and Science portions of this exam are similar to many other college entrance exams such as the SAT,and ACT exams. I have taught English vocabulary development, grammar and writing to high school and college level students for 20+ years. In my work with special needs students, it became customary for me to assist them with their Science and Math to ensure they were meeting all of their requirements for their Individualized Educational Plans which were often part of the regular curriculum administered with accommodations. Therefore, I became well versed in teaching all of the subjects that are required to pass the TEAS exam. In addition, I have studied the test format including how the questions are developed, selected and revised and I am familiar with the types of questions used, the timing format and nationwide distribution of questions over the various regions.

TOEFL

I have taught English as a Second Language for many years. My background is in speech and language. This gives me a unique ability to help students understand and produce the phonemes in the English language in the appropriate manner. I also compare the linguistic differences in the students native language with English to help them understand the various rules of English grammar versus the rules of their native language. I include all of the aspects of the TOEFL test sections in my tutoring program and offer my students frequent opportunities to take mock TOEFL exams to help them become familiar with the testing situation.
If a student has already taken the TOEFL, I use their previous information to analyze the test taking skills as well as their proficiency in the various sections of the test. This information is used to help them focus on specifically challenging areas in order to improve their scores where needed.
