As a teacher, the most rewarding moment is when you see that "light bulb" go on for the student: after showing the same concept in multiple different ways, you finally hit upon the methodology that "clicks" for him/her. The student's face brightens, eyes widen, and smile blossoms; in that moment, he/she feels smart--proud to have the potential to do things that seemed impossible before. It's a moment of empowerment and accomplishment, for both teacher and student. And that's what I love most about teaching.
I have over 25 years of teaching experience in varying capacities. When I was in high school, I was a tutor for other students and a camp counselor over the summer. As an undergraduate college student, I was a "master tutor" for the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Upon obtaining my degree with a double-major in Mathematics and Computer Science, I received a Graduate Teaching Assistantship and was granted the unique opportunity to teach a college course all on my own.
After college, I was registered as a substitute teacher in Broward County. Since then, during the 20 years I've spent as a software engineer for major international technology companies, I have been a leader and mentor of junior engineers, a trainer for customers, and a lecturer/presenter for colleagues in the industry. Most of all, as a father of a blended family of five children, opportunities to impart my knowledge and experience present themselves on a regular basis.
My teaching style focuses on concepts and developing a foundational understanding. I believe that you need to learn the "why" along with the "what" in order to be able to fully grasp a subject and have the ability to extend that to learning new concepts. It's not enough to just teach what a student needs to know to pass a class or finish an assignment; the student needs to have a deep enough understanding to be able to apply that knowledge to related applications and evolution of the subject matter, and to be able to "figure things out" for him/herself in the future.
At the same time, however, learning has to be fun and interesting in order to keep one's attention and make the information "stick". The key is to come up with creative mnemonic devices and humorous examples, while keeping the environment light-hearted and low-pressure. This is the formula for successful tutoring that both the tutor and the student can enjoy!
