I am a PhD scientist offering SAT/ACT mathematics tutoring. Here are my philosophy and approach to teaching SAT/ACT math. I believe that understanding really helps you with getting high scores rather than memorizing to pass exams. Understanding stays forever while memorizing without understanding fades away quickly. Students should be taught rational, logical, and critical thinking. Simply memorizing and blindly applying rules taught at school without understanding is a recipe for failure.
Mathematics, in general, is a process in which learning at a certain level rests on having learned all preceding levels. There is no shortcut to bypass prerequisite knowledge. Short of that, the end result will be failure and you will say like "I hate math."
