Teaching a class has its rewards, but in the 7 years I spent substituting in the elementary school system of Pelham, NY - one of the top rated in Westchester County - I often found myself assigned to one-on-one teaching, including several long term stints. Some of the students needed extra help while others had significant learning disabilities.
Each child was a challenge, unique in his/her own way. My job was to find a way to connect with the child and to make him/her feel good about every small victory. Setting realistic expectations is key for learning, as a child may falter at some difficult tasks. But it is important to focus simultaneously on the many aspects where the child succeeds.
I believe students should have the desire to learn and so anther part of the learning process is knowing why, and how these things relate to and are used in the present and in the future.
I found teaching to be very gratifying but also rewarding were the many "Hi, Mr. S." that would greet me in my community, at the supermarket, the drug store and giving out Halloween candy at my home. These things never failed to make my day. (Yes. Teachers are just regular people, too.)
Since moving to Wellington in 2010, I have kept one foot in the 'teaching' profession by delivering a History Of Broadway Musicals program that I developed for adult audiences here in Palm Beach County.
But I am eager to connect with 'littler' ones again, so a tutoring position seems tailor-made for me.
I received my B.A. degree from St. Peters College in Jersey City, NJ where I majored in English and minored in Education. My business background includes head of marketing for a small advertising agency and Director of Human Resources for a social services organization. Incidentally, the picture posted shows me with my beautiful granddaughter who manages to teach me a thing or two every time I see her.
I think it appropriate for the first session to include meeting the student and parent/guardian, assessing the needed ares of concentration plus tutoring time. I see the sessions running about two hours. My hourly rate will include travel time and expenses, days and times to be determined.
