My primary aim in tutoring students is to assess exactly where they are academically, including reading level and math skills. Then I teach to their exact level. I help them to set up realistic goals and strive to meet those goals. Encouraging students and helping them to see their progress is a big part of their feeling satisfied that their efforts are showing dividends. I have worked with both the extremely bright, gifted students as well as those with learning disabilities so I understand the importance of proper pacing and the use of various modalities for successfully tutoring each individual.

I have always endeavored to excel academically and so sought after and received a top-level education at Duke University. Having a love of language and having a desire to be able to teach at all levels, I obtained an MA in English from the UNC-G. I have had 43 years of teaching and tutoring at all levels, elementary through college. I have taught high school English, college English, SAT Prep, and GRE Prep---both the verbal and the math (I scored almost 800 on the math section). I was responsible for setting up a city-wide tutor-training program for children with learning disabilities, wrote the curriculum, interviewed and selected the tutors and staff, and served as the administrator and supervisor.

Algebra 1

For over three decades I have taught SAT and GRE Prep, which includes Algebra I. I have taught hundreds of students ranging from students with learning disabilities to very gifted students applying to top universities.

Vocabulary

I have vocabulary lists suitable for various ages with activities to reinforce the words such as multiple choice and using the word correctly in a sentence. I teach the Latin roots and prefixes, which help students to break down words they may not know and identify the meaning. As well, I teach the connotation of these roots and prefixes so they are able to identify if it has a positive or negative connotation.

Grammar

I have an extensive knowledge of grammar including all the parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections. I know how to diagram sentences with the proper placement of all eight parts of speech. Reading

Having obtained a BA and MA in English, you, no doubt, know I have a passion for reading. But even more so, I have a passion for passing this knowledge on to others. Writing

I help students with the various forms of writing: creative writing, essay writing, persuasive writing, journal writing, short story writing, journalism, and poetry. As well, I help them learn the basics of writing a research paper.

English

I have an expertise in teaching reading comprehension, spelling, literature, vocabulary, and composition. I taught Great Books for many years and so have an understanding of how to get students to really understand the significance of what they have read by asking them thought-provoking questions. SAT Math

I have spent a couple of decades helping young people prep for the Math SAT. Having scored almost 800 on the math section myself, I know how to help students with all the questions and have devised tests to immediately pinpoint strengths and weaknesses. I emphasize quantitative comparisons, basic algebra and geometry, and mastering word problems. I also help them with study and test-taking skills. One of my students improved her math score 200 points with 16 hours of tutoring.

Literature

Through college and graduate level English classes, I have a background in both English and American literature. Some of my favorite authors include Shakespeare, Dickens, Hardy, and Mark Twain.

GRE

I have tutored SAT and GRE Prep for over three decades and am an expert in helping students improve their scores in reading, math, and writing. My latest GRE student went from the 40th percentile to the 61st percentile and was accepted at the graduate school of her choice. I have helped hundreds of students write and improve their essays. Spelling

I have taught spelling for years and have grade level tests that are suitable for different ages. As well, I have spelling and rhyming games which are helpful for younger students. For more advanced students, I have lists of the most commonly misspelled words.

I studied every science course I could in school including physics and chemistry and particularly enjoy tutoring elementary science.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 12 years of experience tutoring elementary school children in reading, writing, spelling, math, science, and social studies. I studied graduate-level courses in teaching of reading to elementary students. I founded the city's literacy council, and I founded the school's Great Books program. I have years of experience working with children with learning disabilities as well as gifted children.

Phonics

The city asked me to write the tutoring book, with the emphasis on phonics, which was adopted, published and used city-wide by all the tutors. I have spent hundreds of hours tutoring students in phonics, worked with top leaders in the field June Orton and Lucia Karnes, took advanced graduate level reading courses in phonics at UNC-G, and supervised all tutors in the city in the teaching of phonics.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills to elementary, high school and college students with emphasis on the SQ3R Method. I have spent hundreds of hours helping students to be able to plan their study time, take notes, and highlight what is important.

Public Speaking

I have done extensive public speaking, including extemporaneous speaking and oratory. I was captain of the high school debate team that made it to the state finals. At Duke I won the Southeast Regional Debate Tournament. I taught public speaking and debate in high school and served as the debate coach.

Dyslexia

I worked closely with June Orton from Winston-Salem, NC, and her associate, Lucia Karnes, and was trained by them in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching children with dyslexia.
