My primary aim in tutoring students is to assess exactly where they are academically, including reading level and math skills. Then I teach to their exact level. I help them to set up realistic goals and strive to meet those goals. Encouraging students and helping them to see their progress is a big part of their feeling satisfied that their efforts are showing dividends. I have worked with both the extremely bright, gifted students as well as those with learning disabilities so I understand the importance of proper pacing and the use of various modalities for successfully tutoring each individual.
I have always endeavored to excel academically and so sought after and received a top-level education at Duke University. Having a love of language and having a desire to be able to teach at all levels, I obtained an MA in English from the UNC-G. I have had 43 years of teaching and tutoring at all levels, elementary through college. I have taught high school English, college English, SAT Prep, and GRE Prep---both the verbal and the math (I scored almost 800 on the math section). I was responsible for setting up a city-wide tutor-training program for children with learning disabilities, wrote the curriculum, interviewed and selected the tutors and staff, and served as the administrator and supervisor.
