The path I have traveled has had its share of bumps and curves but through out all the experiences along the way, one thing has been consistent and that is my desire to provide service to children who do not fit into the typical public school educational box. Whether it be through the removal of troublesome labels; restoring whole child health and wellness; through curriculum design that fits the way the child learns; or through revamping the classroom or administrative side of primary and secondary education, it has always been about creating the right connection. A Whole Child Learning Connection - to bridge the gap in educational opportunities for all students.

The education and training I received in holistic health enables me to provide services to children and families who are struggling in school. Combining what I learned in my holistic studies with traditional educational degrees has led me in a new direction and revamped my mission in life.

My mission has evolved, igniting a passion to empower all students, regardless of past, present or future circumstance, with the desire to reach their highest potential. The path to reach that goal will most certainly be rough at times. The fear and misconceptions these students have been surrounded by for much of their life, especially in areas of self-worth and abilities, will jump up and present blocks or detours along the way. But with full support and collaboration with family, friends, and community, as well as bringing the focus around to personal strengths, that same path will lead them to success.

Its time to change the focus in education from what's wrong with each child to what's right. I am the tutor who will help you or your child make those changes.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have 3 years experience tutoring youth who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I utilize a variety of differentiated learning methods to provide students with the learning tools they need to be successful. I homeschooled my son, who was diagnosed with ADHD, for 2 years, providing him with the tools to make honor roll for the first time in his academic career.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a year and a half experience tutoring students in grades K-6. Many of these students were part of their school's Title 1 Reading and Math Program. A variety of online learning tools were utilized to improve pronunciation (phonics), comprehension, and problem solving skills. Though these same software programs are unavailable to me at this time, I am able to identify "free" learning software to aid in these same areas.

Nutrition

When tutoring students in nutrition, theories on health and wellness will be discussed. Students will explore CDC requirements for nutritional eating, utilizing a variety of technology sources that enable them to track their ability to meet their nutritional needs. I have a BS in Health & Wellness from Kaplan University, in addition to Associate’s level work in holistic health topics. I worked over 7 years as a holistic health practitioner creating daily food consumption records to enable students to track their eating habits. Students enrolled in Nutrition classes will be provided with additional research sources to enable a better understanding of class topics.

Phonics

During my time tutoring students in Title 1 Reading Programs, phonics cards, worksheets, and computer programs were used. It is important for young people to properly pronounce letters and letter combinations as a precursor to reading and reading comprehension. I have found that students who practice learning games - both written and online - are able to assimilate these games into everyday learning practices. I created worksheets for students in grades 7-12 that presented words based on their phonetic spelling and asked them to identify the word and spell it correctly. I was surprised to find out many of them had trouble with 5th grade spelling words. This understanding provided me with information I needed to create games to improve their reading, comprehension, and spelling. I also included a game that used Greek and Latin Root Words to build vocabulary.

Public Speaking

When tutoring students in public speaking, students work consistently in speech preparation and presentation on several types of speeches including, “What I did last summer”; An Informative Speech; A Persuasive Speech; and a spur of the moment speech based on drawing a topic out of a container. Students study basic concepts of oral communication including overcoming speech anxiety, idea presentation, and research/notes for speaking in front of crowds. Students will be presented with non-verbal cues to draw attention to how they are presenting the information gathered. The purpose behind becoming a competent public speaker includes the empowerment it provides by being able to efficiently get their message across to their audience. I have more than five years’ experience in public speaking on topics ranging from educational methods to community gardening.

Study Skills

Creating workable study skills begins with the development of good organizational skills. I have over 2 years experience in tutoring which enables me to identify specific learning strengths. We begin there, with these identified strengths, and work up an organizational plan that the student can work with. I have over 7 years coaching experience, which means I help each student identify the best methods for setting goals, outlining the steps to reach each goal, and support each step along the path to success.
