My first tutoring experience was at a local community college as part of its program for students with disabilities.

I tutored about 30 hours a week, but the college discontinued the program. I started to tutor privately because I like tutoring and some students asked me to.

I tutor English, Language Arts, grammar, essay writing, speech, American Government, American, European, and World History, and the reading and writing portions of the SAT & ACT.

I would be happy to help you or your student succeed. E-mail me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been tutoring ACT English for three years and have helped students achieve excellent results on the English portion of the ACT test.

ACT Reading

I have been tutoring ACT Reading for three years and have helped students achieve excellent scores on the reading portion of the ACT.

American History

I earned a five on the American History AP exam when I was in high school. I love tutoring American History. I have tutored students from Jesuit, Berkeley, and King HS IB.

English

I majored in English in college and work as a freelance writer. I have taught prep writing at the college level and tutored writing at HCC. I love to help students learn to write better.

ESL/ESOL

I have taken a graduate course at USF that covered the teaching of writing to ESL/ESOL students, and I have tutored numerous international students in my time as a private tutor. I understand the parts of English that give non-native speakers difficulty and can help students to conquer them.

European History

AP European History is a killer for many students because of the volume of college- level reading required to succeed. I have helped several students go from D's or F's to A's in the course. I have tutored several students from King HS's IB program in American History. I have a minor in history from Stetson University.

Government & Politics

I have a minor in Political Science from Stetson University and have managed a winning campaign for a candidate for the Florida State House. I'm a political junkie and love to tutor American Government and Civics courses. I have helped several students from King IB get A's in American Government.

Grammar

I like English Grammar. I know it's a form of mental illness to enjoy it, but I do. My mother was an English teacher so I think it may be a genetic predisposition. I have taught and tutored grammar for many years.

Law

I am looking for students who need help with Business Law, especially students who are taking it at University of Tampa. I have studied the material for the summer course and am tutoring a student who has a nearly perfect score in the class. I can help UT students do better in business law class.

Literature

Majored in English at Stetson University. Some graduate work in early English Literature.

Proofreading

I have proofread websites, press releases, academic papers, book chapters, business plans, blog posts, and magazine articles and college application essays. I will be glad to help you become a better editor and proofreader of your work.

PSAT

Have had several students that became National Merit Scholarship semi finalists, finalists, and recipients.

Public Speaking

I competed in speech and debate during all four years of high school and college. I was a state champion in persuasive speaking in high school and won a national mock trial award in college. I have experience competing in extemporaneous, impromptu, persuasive speaking, Lincoln-Douglas debate and student Congress.

As a tutor, I have worked with students taking speech classes to organize materials and to overcome the fear of speaking in public.

Reading

I have helped students learn to decode and appreciate the written word. I have helped students with summer reading and with reading strategies.

SAT Reading

I have been tutoring SAT reading for five years.

SAT Writing

I have been tutoring SAT writing for five years.

Social Studies

I am certified in American History, World History and European History, and American Government. Since these subjects are what is commonly taught as Social Studies, I would like to be certified to offer to tutor Social Studies.

Study Skills

I have been tutoring for more than five years. I have tutored students from IB to remedial and have specifically worked on techniques for effective study. I achieved a 5 on both American History and European History AP exams, so I know how to study written material and retain it. As I made the transition from high school to college, I went from being an average student to achieving a 4.0. I know time management and can help students organize themselves and learn how to study effectively.

Vocabulary

I have helped students master new vocabulary as part of tutoring the SAT and ACT. I have vocabulary using Frayer models, Latin and Greek roots, and vocabulary cartoons.

World History

Have tutored several students in the ninth grade Ancient World History course that is part of King High School's Pre-IB. Have tutored Jesuit students in World History.

Writing

I have taught writing to speakers of English as a second language. I have taught writing to remedial and gifted students.

One of my SAT Reading tutoring students got her results back today for the October SAT. She achieved a 120-point gain in Critical Reading. I am so proud of her and the work she did between sessions to produce such great results! Way to go, KM!

One of my students showed me a tool that I would like to share to help other tutors and SAT students. In addition to using a set of books called Vocabulary Cartoons, I used word lists from McGraw Hill's SAT 2011 book to teach vocabulary for the sentence completion section of the SAT and PSAT Critical Reading sections. Quizlet is a free website that allows students (or tutors) to create... read more

One of my students just received his scores for the SAT. He and I have been working together once a week since late summer preparing for the PSAT and SAT. We mapped out a careful program based upon the results of his diagnostic reading and writing SAT and worked on the skills that he needed to improve. He achieved a score in the top half of the 99th percentile on the PSAT and a SAT score... read more

Great Tutor and Mentor — Eric is by far the most gifted tutor we have encountered. His dedication to my son in preparing for the Critical Reading and Writing is clearly shown. My son truly understands the English subject through Eric, than what he has learned taking advanced courses throughout high school. I would recommend Eric to any parent looking to improve their child's abilities on the CR/W on the SAT. ...
