B.S. in Mathematics -- MATH and reading are my passions!

Prior tutoring successes have included algebra 1 tutoring of a flunking student who not only passed that course, but became an engineer because he found he liked math and science. Another student was flunking trigonometry. He came to me the NIGHT BEFORE the final, stating he had to pass that exam with a B or better. He made an A on the exam.

I have taught students of all ages, from Kindergarten through college, including GRE prep. I am also a mother of 3 adult kids. All had math, English, and SAT/ACT tutoring (and more...) from me. The oldest is working on her PhD. The middle was awarded the USF Presidential Scholarship for outstanding SAT and GPA. The youngest was a Duke TIP Florida Scholar, STEM engineering magnet high school graduate, and National Merit quarter-finalist.

I give discounts for low income families.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ACT test prep should be done the month prior to taking the test, not the night before.

If tutoring is needed on all subjects, I normally teach four to six 2 hour sessions after proctoring an actual ACT "practice" test. I analyze this test to determine weaknesses and provide a benchmark, with stated improvement goals.

I go over incorrect answers, teaching WHY they are incorrect answers, and go over verification and test taking tips which help raise scores by preventing common and simple errors. I also provide step by step methods for improving the student's actual essay written during the practice test.

ACT Math

ACT test prep should be done the month prior to taking the test, not the night before.

I go over incorrect answers, teaching WHY they are incorrect answers, and go over verification and test taking tips which help raise scores by preventing common and simple errors. For those math subjects that require extra work, I provide tutoring on the necessary pre-requisite math skills.

ACT Reading

Algebra 1

Algebra is still a level of mathematics that can be fun to the general student.

I take the first lesson to listen to the student speak about his/her frustrations and "failures" and to go over basic math... to determine his/her level and weaknesses. In this first lesson, I will also reteach some of the algebra basics that most teachers assume the student already knows.

If the student is currently in algebra, I teach from the student's book, as well as augment it with problems and handouts of my own. I will explain concepts in multiple ways, until one clicks.

If the student is "home schooled", I teach algebra in 10 two hour lessons.

Algebra 2

Algebra is still a level of mathematics that can be fun to the general student.

I take the first lesson to listen to the student speak about his/her frustrations and "failures" and to go over basic math... to determine his/her level and weaknesses. In this first lesson, I will also reteach some of the algebra basics that most teachers assume the student already knows.

ASVAB

Oh no! You scored lower than you wanted on a couple of subjects on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests. You have more military career options and can get higher signing bonuses with a higher ASVAB score. Is it a good decision to retake the test? Yes!

It’s a good decision if you spend time studying for the ASVAB – especially those areas where you scored low. I can tutor all ASVAB subjects and will also go over good testing skills.

Remember the - One Month Gap - Military applicants who have taken an initial ASVAB can retest after one calendar month (31 days) has elapsed. The same is true for retaking it the third time. If you want a fourth retake, you need to wait six more months before you can take the ASVAB again.

Remember it is a - single test - You will have to take the entire battery of subjects. You can’t just take the tests on which you scored low. I will review all the parts of the ASVAB, but again, focus on those subjects where you scored lowest.

Only the - last score counts - You may need to prove your improvement if my tutoring improves your score (AFQT – the math and verbal tests) more than 20 points. Yes, I have improved student test scores that much. If that happens, you will be required to complete a confirmation test. Don’t worry. If this happens, I will give a free refresher 2 days prior to the certification test (NOT the day before... when you should be eating right, relaxing, and getting a good night's sleep).

Chess

I've played recreational chess for 40+ years. I would not charge the tutoring rate for this and would only teach it to students at a beginner (fun) level.

College Counseling

I understand Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) curriculums, course pre-requisites, co-requisites, and course scheduling needed to graduate with a Major in four years.

I can also help a student navigate through community college (with an A.A.) into a four year university.

I am an expert on Florida scholarship requirements, reinstatement processes, prepaid programs, AP, CLEP, Dual enrollment, Florida virtual school, magnet middle and high school curriculum, and more.

I have successfully navigated others through undergraduate school with no outstanding debts.

Computer Programming

As a programmer of 15+ languages, I can help with any/all class programming assignments!

As needed, I tutor from my own programmer textbooks that have simple programming assignments that do not require the computer. It teaches basic programming concepts... IF-THEN-ELSE, etc.

As part of my B.S. in mathematics, I took 30 hours of computer science courses, including the following programming classes: Fortran, Cobol, PASCAL, Assembler, and Basic.

I also spent 20+ years at IBM, many years as a software developer. During this time, I passed the following IBM courses and/or have actually programmed in: C+, C++, and C#; JAVA and Javascript; PLS and PLS2; REXX and JCL; Different system Assembler languages; and HTML and XML.

Dyslexia

I have dyslexia (as well as one of my sons). My mom (who was a middle school science teacher) taught me how to print (when my teacher said I was unteachable). I did the same with my son... who got into USF for engineering, with a 6.1 high school GPA.

Economics

I tutor both macro and micro economics. I will help students taking existing classes, both in high school and in college. I will use both the student's textbooks and my own.

I minored in economics at college.

I am not set up at this time to teach it as a home school module, but will work on it if called by a student to do so.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BS from Florida State University. I was also an Accelerated Reader instructor and supervisor volunteer at ILS (Immanuel Lutheran School) for 6 years.

Elementary Math

I try to use physical props like pies (e.g. apple and lemon), pennies, candy, price tags, and more.

I give puzzles for homework (and prizes) because elementary math is NOT memorization, but logical thinking about the quantitative problems of the real world.

Elementary Science

I only teach elementary science as an additional topic for an existing student or when directly requested.

English

Even though I majored in mathematics, I did equally well in English and Math subjects in aptitude tests.

Because of the recent Florida FCAT news concerning writing scores, I decided to enter into the tutoring realm of English related subjects. The printed examples of fourth and eight grate writing were atrocious.

I also tutored two of my high school children in writing when I realized they had almost traversed the k-12 education system, which included private education for K-7) at a writing level lower than I thought was necessary for entrance to college.

Reading aloud will be part of at least the first lesson. I use reading material that has proper English. I try to find Accelerated Reader books that will be of interest to the reader so that they can also be used in subsequent school AR programs. This provides double the positive reinforcement -- from the tutor and teacher!

ESL/ESOL

I tutor English by both speaking and reading. We will read out loud to each other and then converse about what we have read. I use Accelerated Reader and "I can read" books from my own library, beginning at reading level 0.5.

Fortran

My B.S. in mathematics from FSU included 30 credit hours in computer science courses, including Fortran, which was used in several of the comp. sci. courses.

Many times, learning a language is more than just learning the commands, I also provide tutoring on how to approach a programming problem, both iteratively and recursively.

GED

I graduated from high school in the top 1% in my class, then took the SAT only once, doing well enough to get accepted to all universities to which I applied.

I will listen to what you believe your weaknesses are and work first on those areas. I will require you to do some reading aloud in the first session. In the last session, I will work on timed test taking skills.

General Computer

I have experience on both Microsoft and Apple operating systems and have been on (or using the Internet) since it opened to consumers (remember AOL online?).

I was one of the programmers who worked on IBM's first release of its consumer and business Internet products and services

Geometry

Geometry introduces geometric reasoning (the study of shapes) as a method for problem solving.

If the student wants to cover specific subjects, I will work on those subjects. I always go through algebra basics in a short review because these basics are still used in geometry.

If the student is "home schooled", I teach geometry in 10 two hour lessons.

I physically (through pen and paper, as well as online) show the properties of geometric figures such as triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons.

I show and help the student practice using mathematical language to express important geometric ideas such as symmetry and similarity. I will explain proofs and the logic steps taken, using both visual and intuitive ways of solving problems to the more formal expressions used in proofs.

Grammar

Grammar subjects taught depend upon the student's age and upon the subject level the student has obtained.

The first tutoring session will be in determining what level the student has obtained.

Microsoft Excel

I tutor beginning and intermediate levels of both Microsoft Excel and Lotus 123 spreadsheet applications.

I also am available for reviewing, correcting, and adding functions to existing spreadsheets. When I do this, I explain the results I find so that the student is able to perform the same tasks and continue "maintaining" the spreadsheet.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I tutor beginning and intermediate levels of both Microsoft PowerPoint and Lotus Freelance Graphics slide/chart applications.

I also am available for reviewing, correcting, and adding functions to existing presentations. When I do this, I explain the results I find so that the student is able to perform the same tasks and continue "maintaining" the presentation.

Microsoft Project

I have an IBM certification in project management and have used PERT and Microsoft Project on multi-million dollar projects.

I can tutor on both fundamental and intermediate Microsoft Project features, which correspond to project management tasks such as critical path, resource management, co-requisites, pre-requisites, and more.

Microsoft Word

I tutor beginning and intermediate levels of both Microsoft Word and Lotus Word Pro document applications.

I also am available for reviewing, correcting, and adding functions to existing documents. When I do this, I explain the results I find so that the student is able to perform the same tasks and continue "maintaining" the document.

Phonics

Reading and Phonics go hand-in-hand, especially when students are just learning how to read. I am also certified in Reading.

I have found that there are two main methods for learning how to read. One is phonics, the other is holistic (e.g. memorizing the entire word as the "sound", then extrapolating to other words. I had two children who learned how to read through phonics and one who learned holistically.

In both cases, reading aloud will be part of each lesson.

Physical Science

I provide tutoring based upon the new Florida State standards. For grades K-8, the standards have been organized into four Bodies of Knowledge and eighteen Big Ideas with 288 benchmarks.

At the high school level there are 123 benchmarks that all students are expected to know and be able to do.

I tutor on 1 to 4 benchmarks per two hour session. I stay within one body of knowledge (e.g. energy, matter, motion) and augment with hands-on experiments and examples.

Prealgebra

Based upon my teaching experiences, I believe EVERYBODY can learn math to at least the pre-algebra level.

I take the first lesson to listen to the student speak about his/her frustrations and "failures" and to go over basic math... to determine his/her level and weaknesses. In this first lesson, I will also reteach some of the basics that most teachers assume the student already knows.

If the student is currently in pre-algebra, I teach from the student's book, as well as augment it with problems and handouts of my own. I will explain concepts in multiple ways, until one clicks.

Precalculus

I tutor pre-calculus subjects for students who are currently taking a pre-calculus class. I use the student's own textbook and augment the sessions with work from my own college textbooks. Many topics can be taught in different ways. I will find one that works for the student.

Public Speaking

I am a public speaker and love to zap anyone with the "I can do it" attitude about life long learning. Public speaking is a skill that CAN be learned.

I was a "Math Magic" EPCOT engineering week presenter for 3 years and I given presentations and speeches in IBM for groups ranging from 5 to 100 people.

Reading

Reading and Phonics go hand-in-hand, especially when students are just learning how to read. I am also certified in Phonics.

I have found that there are two main methods for learning how to read. One is phonics, the other is holistic (e.g. memorizing the entire word as the "sound", then extrapolating to other words). I had two children who learned how to read through phonics and one who learned holistically.

In both cases, reading aloud will be part of each lesson. I use reading material that has proper English. I try to find Accelerated Reader books that will be of interest to the reader so that reading comprehension questions can come from school AR programs. This provides double the positive reinforcement -- from the tutor and from the teacher!

SAT Math

SAT test prep should be done the month prior to taking the test, not the night before.

If tutoring is needed on all subjects, I normally teach four to six 2-hour sessions after proctoring an actual SAT "practice" test. I analyze this test to determine weaknesses and provide a benchmark, with stated improvement goals.

I go over incorrect answers, teaching WHY they are incorrect answers, and go over verification and test taking tips which help raise scores by preventing common and simple errors.

SAT Reading

SAT test prep should be done the month prior to taking the test, not the night before.

If tutoring is needed on all subjects, I normally teach four 2 hour sessions, which include taking two complete practice tests. I analyze the first test to determine weaknesses. I go over incorrect answers, teaching WHY they are incorrect answers, and go over verification and test taking tips which help raise scores by preventing common and simple errors.

In the first session, the student will have to do some reading aloud if Reading is part of the total tutoring requirement.

SAT Writing

SAT test prep should be done the month prior to taking the test, not the night before.

If tutoring is needed on all subjects, I normally teach four to six 2 hour sessions after proctoring an actual SAT "practice" test. I analyze this test to determine weaknesses and provide a benchmark, with stated improvement goals.

I go over incorrect answers, teaching WHY they are incorrect answers, and go over verification and test taking tips which help raise scores by preventing common and simple errors. I also provide an SAT "Hit Parade" vocabulary list.

In the first session, the student will have to do some reading aloud if Writing is part of the total tutoring requirement.

Sewing

I teach students the basics of clothing repair:
-- sewing on a button
-- mending a seam
-- sewing a hem
-- letting out the seams of pants/shorts
-- putting patches on knees and elbows
-- "trimming" loose sweater threads

I also teach ironing of different fabric types as part of my lesson.

Spelling

I focus on commonly misspelled words and their meanings so the student can not only improve his/her spelling, but improve his/her grammar and writing skills at the same time.

I have found that reading automatically helps a person's spelling capabilities. There will be both reading (out loud) and writing in these lessons.

The student will also use my computer to look up words and their definitions online.

Statistics

I help tutor students on specific problems. I work from either the student's textbook or from my own college textbooks (I have 3 of them).

I have not set up a home-school lesson plan yet.

Study Skills

I graduated from Florida State University with a Cum Laude in mathematics. I will tutor a student in study skills in tandem with another subject in which I am tutoring the student.

For those who need study skills, I will assign homework and work to motivate students with their efforts and compliance.

For math problems, this will be done on the Internet, with thousands of math problems per topic.

TOEFL

TOEFL test prep should be done the month prior to taking the test, not the night before.

If tutoring is needed on all subjects, I normally teach four 2 hour sessions after proctoring an actual TOEFL "practice" test, which includes all four sections: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I analyze this test to determine weaknesses and provide a benchmark, with stated improvement goals.

I go over incorrect answers, teaching WHY they are incorrect answers.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an important prerequisite to calculus. Sometimes it is taught as a stand-alone subject. sometimes it is taught as part of precalculus. A solid geometry foundation is required.

When I tutor trigonometry, I will first go over basic geometry (triangles and circles), then explain trigonometric functions.

Vocabulary

I focus on commonly misspelled words and their meanings so the student can not only improve his/her spelling, but improve his/her vocabulary, grammar and writing skills at the same time.

I have found that reading automatically helps a person's vocabulary capabilities. There will be both reading (out loud) and writing in these lessons.

The student will also use my computer to look up words and their definitions online.

Depending upon the student's age, I will also include SAT vocabulary words.

Writing

The student will read aloud in the first lesson to determine his or her reading level. The student will also write two short essays to determine his or her writing patterns. Both of these will help me determine a personalized lesson plan for the student.

I use writing material from college textbooks and manuscript writing manuals (used by administrative assistants) that have proper English and most common writing errors.

There will also be some work on expanding the student's vocabulary.
