I have had six years experience as an effective English teacher in a pre-GED Reading class (and successfully started and implemented the first such class in Ohio)and ESOL. I have had six years of experience teaching pre-GED Reading and ESOL in a regular classroom setting, as well as individually to adult students. I use many resources with my students.
I also have had training in the BEST Plus Oral Exam for ESOL students, the STAR Program (for Reading students) and served on the Ohio Statewide Reading/Writing Steering Committee in Ohio.
Many of my adult students did not like to read, but by the end of the course, many of them loved to read and were reading at higher levels.
I am a graduate of UCLA and have done a lot of volunteer work with students of all ages. I won the (Ohio) Jefferson Award for Volunteerism. I helped organize and supervised the first summer school for middle school refugee students, as well as started a basketball program for refugee boys. I initiated community support for refugees and recruited volunteers from schools, churches, universities and a local career center. I have had articles published in local newspapers about living overseas and starting a program for street kids in Kenya, and helping to build Habitat for Humanity houses in Papua New Guinea. I always loved school as a child and learning new things, and hope to spread this enthusiasm to students of all ages.
6 years of teaching ESOL to adult students in Ohio.
1 year of teaching an Advanced and Intermediate Class in Sarasota, Fl.
I have a B.A. degree from U.C.L.A. I have traveled around the world and have always been interested
in international places and people. In my GED classes, I have had both international students and American students, who wanted to increase their Reading in order to pass the GED test.
I have taught phonics to children as well as adults in learning to read. Phonics is very important in learning how to read; in fact, it is the base of our reading. I use phonics cards and worksheets to help students memorize the sounds of words.
