Why choose me?

I trained under Two-Time Pulitzer Prize nominee James S. Olson at Sam Houston State University, where I graduated summa cum laude with an advanced graduate degree in Comparative World history (GPA: 4.0) and minors in Modern European history and American history.

I am an Adjunct Professor of history and education at a local private university as well as an Associate Faculty member at several prestigious online universities and colleges throughout the country.

I have twenty certifications in a variety of subjects for WyzAnt.com, including: U.S. history, World history, European history, Archaeology, Anthropology, Art history, Music history, Classics, Geography, Government and Politics, Economics, Elementary Education (K-6), General Test Prep in ACT English, ACT reading, SAT English, SAT writing, Graduate Record Exam (GRE - I earned a "perfect" score on the Analytical Writing portion of the exam), Grammar, Vocabulary, English, Reading, Writing, Research, Study Skills, and Proofreading.

I teach nearly two dozen different college and university level classes in multiple disciplines (History, Education, Military Studies, Religious Studies, Research Methodologies and Writing) to students of all ages and backgrounds. I've worked with elementary-age children and retired adults seeking to satisfy a lifelong ambition by graduating from college. All of these experiences have touched me deeply, and I've become a better teacher and individual because of them.

My philosophy of education is simple: learning is a process and no two students learn the same. That is why I follow the advice given by Robert Frost - "I am not a teacher, but an awakener." I engage my students in differentiated instruction, an interactive process where I include them as active participants rather than as passive bystanders in their own learning. This simple change of instruction has made all the difference in my effectiveness as a teacher and in their overall achievement and performance.

As a traditional and online professor, I have consistently received high student evaluations of my teaching performance and have many student letters and recommendations attesting to my teaching excellence. I would be happy to supply a copy, upon request.

I've worked as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for a regional accreditation review board which led to successful candidacy of an online university in California, and, just recently, full Western Association of Schools and Colleges regional membership status.

I have published over 45 times in professional history magazines and scholarly journals around the world, including the United States, England, and Europe. My publications have appeared in The Journal of Elementary and Secondary Education, The Journal of Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Reviews in History, a publication of the Institute for Historical Research, London, De Re Militari, a publication of The Society for Medieval Military History (USA) and Historical Quest, a fully digitized history magazine based in Athens, Greece.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ACT preparation is important, especially in achieving the best possible score. It can often make the difference in getting into your college of choice. We can focus on problem areas or take a more general, holistic approach, and touch on every key area.

American History

Topics include but are not limited to U.S. History in high school, AP American history for college-credit and U.S. History I&II for college level students.

Art History

At New College of Florida, my area of concentration was "Medieval and Renaissance Studies." Part of that program involved art history of which I've taken enough for a minor field. My specialty area is Art History from the Renaissance period through early 20th century. My secondary area is Renaissance art.

Classics

At New College of Florida, in Sarasota, FL, my concentration was "Medieval and Renaissance Studies" but my mentor was a Classics professor, so I took equally as much in Classics, including Late Antiquity, Greek Literature, and Latin. In addition, I've taken graduate courses in Ancient military history.

College Counseling

As an external course reviewer for auditing and regional accreditation reviews and college professor at several universities around the country, I am uniquely placed to help students entering college to make the transition seamlessly.

Elementary (K-6th)

I continue to work part-time at a Charter School that is 6-8 grades. I've also worked one on one with students with learning disabilities. Like tutoring, working closely with one or two students gives them the desired attention they lack in more formal classroom settings. Thus, students are able to address specific areas and build confidence in the process.

European History

AP European history for college-level credit, Western Civilization I&II for college students or general European history sequences.

Proofreading

I can proofread a variety of papers for grammar, mechanics, basic style (unless you want more constructive feedback) and spelling. This is particularly important for junior and senior research papers, which are required portions of English III & IV in high school.
I can also proofread a variety of papers for college-level students.

Religion

I hold 24 graduate hours in Religious Studies and can teach a variety of topics, spanning from ancient Christianity to modern religious debates. Much of my coursework centered on the 16th Century Reformation and Historical Christianity.

Social Studies

My teacher certification was in Social Studies 6-12 and my undergraduate degrees is in history and my graduate degree is in European history.

Study Skills

Strong study skills are the foundation upon which all historical research is based. As such, I have a system for approaching different disciplines and following a variety of study approaches that foster the greatest degree of success and student achievement. I counsel students, of all ages, how to approach their unique situation with the best possible solution. My background as a doctoral candidate in curriculum and teaching as well as holding advanced degrees in history and being a published Amazon.com author show that I know how to plan effectively and implement different strategies for success. These same study skills I will pass on to my students.

Vocabulary

I cannot stress enough the importance of a good working vocabulary. Research indicates that a broad vocabulary is one of the most important factors in earning promotion and securing good employment. In high school, most curriculums include a "vocabulary workbook. It is essential that you gain an understanding of vocabulary, synonyms, and antonyms.

Writing

Writing is an often overlooked form of communication, but in school, the workplace, and in everyday life, we use writing on a daily basis. As a published historian, I can help you become a better writer and help you express yourself more clearly and succinctly. But, as with most things, writing takes time and a great deal of patience. It can be challenging but the reward is great!

Terrific Tutor! — Chris was wonderful to work with. He determined right away the areas that I needed help with for English writing, and the areas that I was already proficient in. Chris is very easy to work with and extremely knowledgeable. I was able to clearly understand his directions which helped a lot (some tutors can be very confusing!). Chris always got right back with me too. I have had other experiences wh ...
