I teach because I love to see students of all ages, grasp a concept that is new to them, or that they had trouble understanding before they were in my class. I have taught music in both public schools, church organizations, and private lessons. I have had great success with teaching all types of students based on using a personality-needs assessment approach. Reading

Reading opens a world of knowledge to every person. Finding topics that interest young readers is key in success. Also learning proper sounds for phonics enables success. I have taught students aged 4+ how to read music, and phonetics to elementary and middle school students. Making learning fun allows students to learn without realizing that they are working hard.

Music Theory

Music Theory is the foundation for learning to read/write music. Having taught students ages 4+ since 1985 has brought some very successful stories to my reputation. If you feel like you are learning a foreign language when you see music, I can help you make sense of it...guaranteed!

English

English is a language which involves many different elements. Learning to speak the language requires understanding phonics, spelling, and the alphabet. Once a student learns these elements, then they can begin writing English...communicating on paper. Students who excel in English can become great teachers, writers, journalists, editors, and speakers.

Elementary Math

Making math fun is a key element in student success. I have found that students have difficulty comprehending concepts that aren't explained on a level that they can relate to. As a teacher, I try to relate the concepts to areas of interest for the student. Once they truly understand a concept, then they can use it.

Elementary Science

Science is the study of knowledge, and it can be fun, though at times challenging. Learning about the makeup of both animate and inanimate objects can be much like investigation. There are facts and there are unknowns. Using proven resources, students can learn how to understand the purpose of science, and apply what they read to determine a conclusion.

Ear Training

My undergraduate degree was in Music Education. Having a concentration in piano and vocal performance, ear training was part of the curriculum requirements. I excelled in this area of study. I have taught it throughout my 26 years of teaching and conducting choirs.

Phonics

I have always enjoyed teaching people how to sing and speak correctly and clearly. As a voice teacher, I am very comfortable teaching how letters sound and how to properly form each sound with your mouth. Students who learn their phonics will do very well in vocabulary, spelling, writing, as well as speaking and singing.

Piano

Piano and voice are my two main instruments. I have played since I was 8 and have sung even longer. I currently teach private music lessons and have annual student recitals. I currently serve as the accompanist at a local church in Sanford. I also direct the older children's choir. I handle all of the music instruction and accompanying for the choirs, as well as for the praise team and the services. I also play for holiday parties, receptions, weddings and funerals.

Sight Singing

My sightreading skills are excellent!!! I have been reading music for approximately 40 years, and have played piano the same amount of time. I teach music privately and have taught publicly as well as directed choirs in churches. I can look at a piece of music and sing it with 90%+ accuracy and play it with 85%+ accuracy. It amazes people how I can do this, but years of experience have strengthened this area of music for me.

Voice (Music)

My two favorite hobbies are playing the piano and singing. As a music education major, these were my two instruments of choice in college. I took piano lessons as a child, and then played and sung my way through elementary school choirs, high school chorus and jazz band, church youth music camps, college madrigal dinners, operettas, and other seasonal concerts.

Trumpet

My brass instrument of experience has been the french horn. However, most of the brass family have three valves, which share the same fingering. I have taught trumpet and french horn before, and have given playing advice to tuba players as well. I have directed a pep band, a church orchestra, bell choir, etc. I teach how to read music through the use of various instruments. I am very comfortable teaching the trumpet.

Public Speaking

Becoming a good public speaker requires confidence, as well as clear speaking voice. These are both skills that can be learned. I am a proficient speaker, having been in front of audiences in school settings, church settings, business meetings, and one-on-one consultations. Cooking

I love to cook and I also love to bake. I do it for fun and to share with people who need to feel special (birthdays, new neighbors, hospital visits, etc.) I have had to prepare meals for one person, up to 120 people. I was raised with southern foods, but I have tried to make them a little healthier, with less lard and salt, than usual. Haven't had any complaints on my cooking. I also enjoy adapting recipes to meet dietary needs.

ADD/ADHD

I have found through years of teaching, that ADD/ADHD are most often people who have the two strongest (extrovert) personality traits of the four. Everyone is a blend, but ADD/ADHD most often have the two dominant personalities, thus making it difficult for those who have "quiet" personalities to deal with.
