I have taught elementary special education students for over 25 years, in both general education (inclusion) settings and special needs classrooms. My primary focus is on reading skills, but I am comfortable working in any elementary subject. I have a background in emotional/behavioral disturbances, and can establish a good rapport with almost any student! I begin working with a student by learning what he/she already knows; what the strengths and weaknesses are, and what we can build upon. I use a variety of materials and strategies depending on the learning style and needs of each child. I am a firm believer in frequent and meaningful praise, as well as offering critiques and suggestions for improvement in a positive manner. If my presentation of material isn't working, I have no problem with changing what I am doing, so that neither the student nor I leave the session feeling frustrated, but instead leave with a sense of accomplishment and pride in our work.
