My philosophy of education:
My teaching is unique and resists a neat philosophical classification. I encourage students to think for themselves, and resist any urge to tell them what to think. I am more interested in students developing original thought than agreeing with a certain ideology, even if that ideology is mine. I want my students to think differently and dare to dream, learn, and achieve. I desire to encourage a sense of wonderment in the world around us. I utilize lots of humor and real world stories from my experience in private practice to make learning real and alive. I like to model unconditional positive regard with my students.
Personal contact with students is essential to my approach. When I teach a course, I try to know each student by name and know at least one piece of personal information about him or her by the third meeting. I try my best to do this regardless of class size. My students are not a collective or even a class, but rather a gathering of individuals, each unique with something to offer to enrich the learning experience. I am very careful to take time and build relationships with students, and strive to be someone that they can respect. Because of this, I am very often invited to student graduations, weddings, and many other important life events. It is very important to me that my students know that I care and that I am not just someone who delivers information and records their grade.
I begin each class by going around the room and greeting each student by name and shaking hands with each of them. I use a hilarious overhead photo and a story to prepare students for what I am going to share with them that day. I realize that lecture is necessary, but really enjoy breaking students into small groups, and doing as much interactive hands-on learning as possible. It is not at all uncommon for me to share a memorized poem or story in my classes to link together disciplines. Most importantly, I dare my students to dream.

Having gone through several tutors that weren't good matches for my daughter, we tried Robby. Robby has a completely different approach to learning, comprehension, and retention. My daughter not only grasped her material in a new a different way, but she retained it. It was an added bonus to see her laugh during her lesson!
My daughter met with this tutor to help her in essay writing. He took the time to explain different methods to overcome the mental block, but most importantly, used methods that were easy for her to understand. My daughter was very encouraged that she could write or at least start an essay after this one session. We are definitely going to see him again. Very patient and took the time to ask questions to individualize the teaching session to meet my daughter's needs.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
