I am tri-lingual: English, Spanish, and Music!!
I consider myself very fortunate to have, over the years, been given the opportunity to teach music courses covering a wide spectrum of styles and structures. Because I have taught courses such as Music Appreciation for Non-Music Majors, Class Piano as well as individual piano lessons, Keyboard Harmony (in group format), Introduction to Music Theory, and Music Theory II, I have come in contact with students from all walks of life with a wide range of musical abilities. This has helped me to keep an open mind for my teaching approach. even though it is important to follow an established curriculum for each class.
I am also very fortunate that I come from a musical family where both parents were professional opera singers. From a very early age, they instilled in me a passion for music that has continued to grow to this date. I know that students find my enthusiasm for music contagious.
Knowing that students can have a tendency to be nervous when performing, I always tell them: Nothing is ever as difficult as it sounds. For students getting ready for live performances, I like to keep them as focused as possible: “When you make a mistake, the natural tendency is to curse yourself for the next 30 seconds, incredulous of the note(s) that slipped away. This generally results in further mistakes, or an uncertain musical interpretation. Though much easier said than done, as soon as that mistake has occurred, the student must immediately put it behind, as it had never existed in order to focus on the moment. I strongly believe in the learning process, not processing learners. If I see a student struggling, I will approach that student to determine what the problem is, and help the student reach his or her goal.
I have taught music theory for over ten years. Part of my training has included ear training: melodic and rhythmic dictation, interval and chord recognition, etc. I am fortunate to have perfect pitch.
As part of my graduate studies, I have done extensive research on Music History. I am qualified to teach history from Baroque to Contemporary music, as well as Opera. I have taught courses such as Music Appreciation for Non-Music Majors, Class Piano as well as individual piano lessons, Keyboard Harmony (in group format), Introduction to Music Theory, and Music Theory II.
As part of my undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies in music, I have had extensive training in music theory. I taught at the University of Akron's School of Music for 6 years. Some of the courses included Keyboard Harmony, Music Fundamentals, Class Piano, Intro to Music Theory, Music Theory I and II.
I have a Doctorate in Piano. I have taught private and class piano lessons for over 20 years. Students ages have ranged from 4 to 84!
I have an earned Doctorate in Piano Performance and Collaborative Piano. This has given me years of experience accompanying singers of all styles, and have become very familiar with song structure and its compositional process. I also have background in Keyboard Harmony and Music Theory.
