Greetings!

My name is Robert, and I truly enjoy teaching. There is something very rewarding about watching somebody who has been struggling to understand something finally "get it." That's what teaching is all about - explaining (and often re-explaining) something in such a way that your student gets it. More often than not, the struggle to learn is not the fault of the student, but the fault of the learning environment. One-on-one teaching and learning allows the teacher to tailor the instruction to how the student learns. That is the ideal learning environment.

As a private tutor, I do more than simply teach the subject. I teach the student. Every student has a personal learning style. That learning style determines how we best assimilate information. It also determines what subjects we like, how we perform in class and on tests, and our study habits. "Teaching the student" involves showing the student how to use and expand his or her individual learning style to assimilate information irrespective of the subject.

Of course, you will be hiring me to teach something specific. I am certified by WyzAnt to tutor in several different subjects and to prepare students for many standardized tests. Helping my students "get it," often involves explaining complicated things in simple terms. This is challenge and the reward of tutoring. I believe that, if my student isn't learning, then I'm not teaching. It isn't the student's responsibility to rise to the level at which I am teaching. It is my responsibility to find the level at which the student is learning. That is what makes me a good tutor.

Every student is different and deserves a different approach to learning. If you want a tutor who will take the time and make the effort to understand your or your child's learning style; and who tailors each and every lesson to the student, contact me. I really do help my students "get" what they are having difficulty understanding. Thank you very much for your consideration.

Robert’s subjects

ACT English

The ACT English portion tests a student's proficiency in punctuation, grammar and usage, sentence structure, as well as writing strategy, organization, and style. The student has 45 minutes to complete the 75 question exam. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

ACT Math

The ACT math portion tests a student's proficiency in pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. The student has 60 minutes to complete the 60 question exam. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

ACT Reading

The ACT reading portion tests a student's reading comprehension of four types of reading selections: social studies, natural sciences, prose fiction, and humanities. The student has 35 minutes to complete the 40 question exam. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills.I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

ACT Science

The ACT science portion tests a student's proficiency in scientific reasoning. While the content of the test includes biology, chemistry, physics, and the Earth/Space sciences, advanced knowledge in these subjects is not required. 45% of the test requires the student to understand how experiments are designed and how the results are interpreted. 38% of the test requires the student to read and interpret graphs, scatterplots, tables, diagrams, and figures. The remaining 17% of the test requires the student to understand, analyze, and compare alternative scientific hypotheses. I will not only ensure that the student understands and can apply scientific reasoning, but will also ensure that the student understands the structure of the test and has some good test taking skills.

American History

History is one of those subjects that requires a fair amount of memorization. Unfortunately, many students do not have very well developed memorization skills. I approach history lessons from two directions. First, using a student's individual learning styles as a guide, I present the material in such a way as to make it interesting to that student. Second, I teach the student how to use his or her learning style to more easily memorize people, places, dates, etc. In most cases, this approach greatly increases the student's retention ability, resulting in better grades.

ASVAB

The ASVAB is a timed multi-aptitude test. A student's scores in four critical areas of arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, and mathematics knowledge count towards his or her Armed Forces Qualifying Test score, which determines whether the student is qualified to enlist in the U.S. military. The other areas of the ASVAB determine the student's qualification for certain military occupational specialties and enlistment bonuses. A high score on the ASVAB increases the military occupations from which a student can choose and may affect his or her enlistment bonus. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

Bible Studies

I am a graduate of Victory Bible Training Center. Over the past 20 years I have taught several Sunday school classes for ages six to sixty. I have also spoken by invitation at Bible conferences and men's retreats since 1995. Occasionally, I have filled in for my Pastor when he has been unable to attend a service. In the context of tutoring, perhaps my most relevant experience has been in leading various home groups for the past 15 years. It is in these small group discussions, more than any other forum, that lives are impacted in a positive way.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is the foundation upon which all higher mathematical studies will be built. If this foundation isn't solid, the student will struggle in all areas of higher math. More importantly, without a solid understanding of elementary math, the student will have a difficult time in every day life. We use math to balance our checkbooks, to calculate how long it will take to get to work, to fix dinner, and so much more. Students who have difficulty in math often need someone who can explain mathematical equations in practical terms. I will teach math beyond the numbers so that the student gets it.

Elementary Science

Elementary Science is a student's first formal introduction to the world around us. While science is an exciting adventure of discovery, it can also be difficult for students to assimilate all of the new concepts and terms necessary to make this process enjoyable. I teach my students how to use their individual learning styles to memorize the core terms and concepts of science as well as tutoring them on the specific subject matter with which they are having difficulty.

English

The study of English is a very broad and diverse discipline. It encompasses several sub-disciplines including grammar, reading, sentence structure, speaking, spelling, vocabulary, and writing, just to name a few. Effective communication is a skill that has far reaching benefits. Being able to effectively communicate begins with the study of English. I will assess in which sub-disciplines the student is weak and focus on those areas most when tutoring.

European History

History is one of those subjects that requires a fair amount of memorization. Unfortunately, many students do not have very well developed memorization skills. I approach history lessons from two directions. First, using a student's individual learning styles as a guide, I present the material in such a way as to make it interesting to that student. Second, I teach the student how to use his or her learning style to more easily memorize people, places, dates, etc. In most cases, this approach greatly increases the student's retention ability, resulting in better grades.

GED

The GED is a comprised of five sections that tests writing (70 minutes/50 questions and a 45 minute essay), social studies (70 minutes/50 questions), science (80 minutes/50 questions), reading (65 minutes/40 questions based on seven 300-400 word reading passages), and mathematics (65 question/45 minutes). I will tutor you in one or all of these subjects. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test-taking skills.

Geometry

Geometry may be the “black sheep” of the mathematics subjects. Unlike other branches of mathematics, it deals with objects, their shape, the spatial relationships among them, and the properties of the space surrounding them. It may also be one of the most practical branches of mathematics. Geometry can be used to solve many every-day problems. The key to understanding geometry is in its practical applications. Unfortunately, many students get so caught up in memorizing the theorems that they miss the practical nature of geometry. I tutor my geometry students using practical examples that are of interest to them. This not only helps them understand the subject material, but makes learning more enjoyable, resulting in better grades.

GMAT

The GMAT consists of four main sections — analytical writing assessment (analysis of an argument/30 minutes), integrated reasoning (12 questions in multi-source reasoning, graphics interpretation, two-part analysis, and table analysis/30 minutes) quantitative (37 questions in data sufficiency and problem solving/75 minutes), and verbal (41 questions in reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction/75 minutes). I will tutor you in one or all of these disciplines. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

Government & Politics

Government & Politics is one of those subjects that requires a fair amount of memorization. Unfortunately, many students do not have very well developed memorization skills. I approach government & politics lessons from two directions. First, using a student's individual learning styles as a guide, I present the material in such a way as to make it interesting to that student. Second, I teach the student how to use his or her learning style to more easily memorize people, places, dates, etc. In most cases, this approach greatly increases the student's retention ability, resulting in better grades.

Grammar

English grammar is the study of the structure of our language. Language structure is critical to communication. A solid understanding of English grammar ensures that the message being communicated won't be misinterpreted. I will not only explain the rules of language structure to the student, but also make sure that the student understands the importance of those rules in effective communication. Knowing why a rule is important is often the key to remembering the rule and using it properly.

GRE

The GRE revised General Test consists of three sections that evaluate the student's verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills. I will tutor in one or all of these disciplines. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

LSAT

The LSAT consists of five 35-minute sections, only four of which are scored, and a 35-minute writing sample that is sent to the law schools to which you apply. The LSAT is designed to assess the student's competence in reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, and logical reasoning. I will tutor you in one or all of these disciplines. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. i will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

Philosophy

My favorite definition of philosophy is "the rational investigation of the truths of principles of being." The study of philosophy, however, deals with knowing and understanding how great thinkers over thousands of years have conducted this investigation. In addition to helping my students understand the panoply of philosophic thought; I will help the student understand how the he or she learns and remembers facts. This will provide the student with the tools and techniques necessary to maximize those abilities.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra introduces the student to the concept of using variables to represent numbers in an equation. The use of variables in mathematics widely expands what the student can do with the math he or she already knows. There are several ways to introduce a student to the concept variables. i will find out how the student learns and teach him or her to use the techniques that best fit into that learning style. Once learned, these techniques can be used to learn even the most complex mathematical concepts.

Proofreading

Proofreading is, quite simply, reviewing written text carefully to find and correct typographical errors and mistakes in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style. It is a skill important to everyone who writes. Of course there are those who proofread what others write, but proofreading is most commonly used to review and correct one's own writing. Proofreading is a skill that will make you a better student in almost every other subject.

PSAT

The PSAT consists of two 25-minute critical reading sections, two 25-minute math sections, and one 30-minute writing skills section. I will tutor you in one or all of these subjects. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. i will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

Reading

Reading is perhaps the most fundamental skill in education. Students who have trouble with reading comprehension will also have trouble understanding textbooks, completing homework, and taking written tests in every other subject. I will give the student several techniques to improve his or her reading comprehension, and also work on the skills that support reading comprehension such as vocabulary and grammar.

SAT Math

The SAT math portion tests a student's proficiency in basic arithmetic, algebra I & II, and geometry. The 70 minute math portion is given three sessions: two 25 minute sessions and one 20 minute session. There are 54 questions, 44 of which are multiple choice and 10 of which are grid-in. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

SAT Reading

The SAT reading portion tests a student's reading comprehension through passagee-based questions, and vocabulary through sentence completion questions. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

SAT Writing

The SAT writing portion tests a student's writing proficiency. The test includes a 25-minute essay, a 25-minute multiple choice section, and a 10-minute multiple choice section. There are 25 multiple choice questions on improving sentences, 18 multiple choice questions on identifying sentence errors, and 6 multiple choice questions on improving paragraphs. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

SSAT

The SSAT is administered on three levels - elementary (grades 3-4), middle (grades 5-7), and upper (grades 8-11: and measures a student’s abilities in the areas verbal, quantitative, and reading comprehension. There is also an ungraded writing sample that will be sent to schools along with the student's application for entry. I am qualified to tutor all levels of the SSAT, and will tutor you in one or all of these subjects. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. A good SSAT tutor will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

TOEFL

The TOEFL measures the student's ability to use and understand English at the university level. It consists of four main sections — reading, listening, speaking, and writing. I will tutor you in one or all of these disciplines. In addition to knowing the subject matter being tested, the student will need some basic test taking skills. I will not only ensure the student understands the subject matter being tested, but also the structure of the test and some good test taking skills.

Vocabulary

We use words every day to express ourselves. The more words you know, the better you will be able to express yourself, and the better you will be able to understand others. Words have meaning, but they have also have "flavor." Choosing between words with similar meanings is often a matter of the flavor you are trying to convey in your message. Building your vocabulary is not a matter of memorizing the dictionary. A good vocabulary tutor will help the student learn more than word definitions. I will help the student learn how to use those words to express themselves effectively every day.

World History

History is one of those subjects that requires a fair amount of memorization. Unfortunately, many students do not have very well developed memorization skills. I approach history lessons from two directions. First, using a student's individual learning styles as a guide, I present the material in such a way as to make it interesting to that student. Second, I teach the student how to use his or her learning style to more easily memorize people, places, dates, etc. In most cases, this approach greatly increases the student's retention ability, resulting in better grades.

Writing

Writing is a critical life skill. Often, our first introduction to someone is through his or her writing. It could be an email, a letter, a brochure, or a resume, but that introduction will likely cause us to form an opinion of that person's education, intelligence, and social status. Right or wrong, we all make these judgments based on a person's writing skills... and they make those same judgments about us based on our writing skills. I will help the student develop all of the skills and give him or her all the tools needed to be an effective writer.
