ACT English

I have worked with dozens of students preparing for a variety of standardized tests in a tutoring center (4 yrs) and privately (10+ yrs). I am sure I can help you be successful on the English portion of the ACT.

ACT Math

Many students, especially those majoring in the Social Sciences and Humanities, find the Quantitative portion of the ACT daunting, but it doesn't have to be. I have personally worked with many students who have subsequently increased their score on that portion of the ACT 3 points or more. Let me help you achieve the high score that you desire.

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of the most important subjects you will ever take because it teaches abstract thinking, which, in turn, will help you to think more deeply about every other subject you ever take. Because of that, algebra is my favorite math subject to tutor. I have over a decade of experience tutoring math at all levels to students ranging from 4th graders to empty-nesters attending college for the first time. Whatever problems you are having with algebra, I am sure I can help you be successful.

Algebra 2

Algebra is one of the most important subjects you will ever take because it teaches abstract thinking, which, in turn, will help you to think more deeply about every other subject you ever take. Because of that, algebra is my favorite math subject to tutor. I have over a decade of experience tutoring math at all levels to students ranging from 4th graders to empty-nesters attending college for the first time. Whatever problems you are having with algebra, I am sure I can help you be successful.

Anthropology

I have an MA in Anthropology with a minor in Music. I taught Cultural and Physical Anthropology at the community college level for six years.

Archaeology

I have an MA in Anthropology with a minor in Music. Archaeology is a subfield and part of the curriculum. I was employed as a contract archaeologist for three years in various positions including Lab Director, Assistant Lab Director, and Assistant Field Crew Chief. I taught Cultural and Physical Anthropology at the community college level for six years. Both classes included Archaeology content.

Art History

Between the cultural anthropology, historical archaeology, humanities, and history course work I took (over 100 graduate and undergraduate hours), I was exposed to a great deal of art history, from the classical art and architecture of the Greeks and Romans through Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and the various periods of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. My particular interest is architecture.

ASVAB

I spent four years working in a tutoring center where we worked with students preparing for a variety of standardized tests, including the ASVAB. I also did this kind of prep privately. I am sure I can help you be successful on the ASVAB and look forward to working with you.

Botany

My interest in botany began with the first class I took in that subject in undergraduate school. Through this I became interested in the development and migration of various species throughout the world and how that led to the development of what we refer to as "national cuisines." Over the years, I have become an avid gardener and enjoy growing heirloom species of edible plants and am working toward a Florida native species yard.

Calculus

Studying calculus is like entering a whole new universe that you didn't even know was there, and for me it was one of the most exciting and memorable subjects I ever studied. But for many students, especially those who are taking calculus to fulfill requirements for medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, or business school, the prospect of taking calculus can be truly daunting. Take heart! I came from a social science/humanities background and fell in love with calculus and I can help you master it, and maybe even love it a little bit, as well.

Chemistry

Though it was not my major, I took several classes in chemistry in college, including organic chemistry and environmental chemistry, and I have taught chemistry at the high school level, both in the classroom and as a homebound instructor. I am sure I can help you in your quest to be successful in chemistry.

CLAST

I was employed in a Tutoring Center at the community college for four years. One of the areas in which we offered assistance was in CLAST preparation. Concurrently, I tutored students privately in CLAST preparation.

Cooking

I cook everything from scratch and specialize in vegan, vegetarian, and ethnic cuisine, though I can cook anything. I am also good at economical, nutritious, and easy to prepare meals for college students having put myself through college and grad school on a shoestring. I grow my own herbs and veggies.

Economics

I have an MA in cultural anthropology and taught at the community college level. My classes Intro to Cultural Anthropology and Peoples of the World included significant material in national and global economics. I also completed coursework in economics at both undergraduate and graduate levels and made As in those classes.

English

I taught English for several years at the high school level and have tutored English privately for standardized test prep (TABE, GED, SAT, ACT, GRE, and ASVAB) with excellent results, including situations in which students were trying to improve previous scores significantly. I have also written revisions for aircraft technical manuals and for academic publication. Whatever problems you are having with English, I am sure I can help you achieve your highest possible result.

GED

I have tutored many students for the GED and all were successful in passing the first time. These students ranged in age from still in their teens so they could attend college to empty nesters who simply wanted to pass it for personal satisfaction. I am sure I can help you whatever your motivation for taking the GED.

General Music

I have been a musician since the age of eight. As part of my graduate course work in Anthropology I took classes in both music history and music theory. I play the clarinet, flute, and a number of instruments used in early music performance, including recorder, krumhorn, kortholt, and mandola. As a high school student, I won medals for solo performance at the district and state levels. As an adult, I performed in an early music ensemble for four years, in community band and community chorus for three years, and in a Balinese Gamelan ensemble for one year.

Geometry

Geometry is the true complement of algebra; algebra teaches abstract thinking, but geometry teaches logical thinking. It's one thing to state a conclusion that seems obvious; it's another to justify that conclusion through a logical thought sequence and that is what geometry is all about. Whatever problems you're having, I am sure I can get you on your way to a deeper understanding and appreciation of geometry.

GRE

I worked for several years in a college math tutoring center where, in addition to tutoring the various subject areas we also assisted students in preparing for the math portions of the SAT, ACT, GRE, and CLAST. I have also tutored math privately for more than a decade. Whatever your deficiencies in math, I am certain I can help you achieve your highest score possible.

Logic

I worked in a community college math tutoring center for four years where, among other things, I tutored students in logic, which was a component of the Liberal Arts Math classes and the CLAST test (community college exit exam). I also created many of the study guides and worksheets for logic used in the math center.

Music History

As a graduate student, my minor was in music. As part of that curriculum I took several classes in Music History. I have been a musician since the age of eight and have performed music from a wide range of periods, Medieval through modern as well as world music (Balinese Gamelan).

Needlework

I can knit and crochet, but devote most of my energy to cross stitch, crewel embroidery, needlepoint, hairpin lace, and smocking. I am currently learning tatting and lace making. I have been doing this type of work for approximately forty years.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken organic chemistry and made an A in the class; I made a 100 on the final. I helped fellow classmates in the course of that class and I have since tutored other students, mostly nursing students, successfully in organic chemistry.

Praxis

While working in a college math tutoring center and while tutoring privately, I tutored many students for teacher certification exam preparation, including the Praxis and the Florida Teacher Competency Exam (FTCE), with very successful results - all passed on the first attempt. As a certified teacher, I have personal experience with these exams, as well.

Prealgebra

Algebra is one of the most important subjects you will ever take because it teaches abstract thinking which, in turn, will help you in ever other subject you ever take. Because of that, algebra is my favorite math subject to tutor. I have over a decade experience tutoring math at all levels to students ranging from 4th graders to empty nesters attending college for the first time. I also worked in a community college math tutoring center for four years. Whatever problems you are having with algebra, I am sure I can help you be successful.

Precalculus

Precalculus, together with Trigonometry, is is immediately prerequisite to Calculus I. Having a thorough understanding of every aspect of Precalculus is absolutely essential to success in Calculus. Whatever problems you are having, I can help you fill in the gaps in your understanding.

Probability

In addition to tutoring privately for over a decade, I worked in a community college math tutoring center for four years. At the same college, I tutored math for Disability Support Services and also for the Division of Blind Services. In addition to Probability, Statistics, and Logic, I tutor all math subjects including High School, College Remedial, College Algebra, Liberal Arts Math, Probability, Precalculus, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Whatever difficulties you're having, I'm sure I can get you back on track.

Proofreading

I gained experience proofing scholarly papers beginning in graduate school when part of my job as a grad assistant was proofing theses and dissertations. I also transcribed and proofed papers for my major professor for publication. I continued proofing on the side after graduate school. As a community college instructor I required grammatical accuracy in the papers submitted by my students even though I was teaching anthropology and many of them thought that was asking "too much." Spell/grammar check doesn't catch everything and really isn't geared for nuance. Whatever your proofreading need, I am sure I can handle it to your satisfaction.

SAT Math

Many students, especially those majoring in the Social Sciences and Humanities, find the Quantitative portion of the SAT daunting, but it doesn't have to be. I have personally worked with many students who have subsequently increased their score on that portion of the SAT 100 points or more. Let me help you achieve the high score that you desire.

Sewing

I have been sewing since the 9th grade and made all of my clothes throughout college and grad school. I have made suits, coats, bridesmaid dresses, and confirmation dresses and have worked with all brands of patterns. I also do doll clothes/ accessories for 18" dolls, quilting, and applique.

Social Studies

I have a BA in Latin American Studies and an MA in Anthropology. I am certified (Florida) in the broad area of Social Studies which required coursework in Anthropology, History, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Geography, and Psychology. I am also qualified to teach Anthropology and History at the community college level and taught Physical and Cultural Anthropology at that level for six years.

Sociology

I have a BA in Latin American Studies and an MA in Anthropology. I am certified (Florida) in the broad area of Social Studies which required coursework in Anthropology, History, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Geography, and Psychology. I am also qualified to teach Anthropology and History at the community college level and taught Physical and Cultural Anthropology at that level for six years.

Spanish

I majored in Latin American Studies, was an exchange student in Peru, and spent two summers in Spain. I taught both Spanish and French in the public schools and am certified in both languages. I speak Spanish, but I am not a native speaker, so I've been where you are and I'm sure I can help.

Statistics

A class in statistics is often required for a variety of disciplines not related to math or science, including psychology, business, anthropology, economics, and public health, and an understanding of basic statistical principles is necessary to comprehend the research of others and to produce a statistical analysis of your own work. I have tutored students in statistics for over a decade; whether you difficulty is in analyzing normal distributions or hypothesis testing, I am sure I can get you back on track.

Trigonometry

Having a deep understanding of trigonometry is absolutely essential, especially if you plan to take calculus because many problems in Calculus II simply cannot be solved without a thorough understanding of trig substitutions. I am fully certified in mathematics, have taught math both in the classroom and in a community college math tutoring center, and have tutored privately for over a decade. Whatever problems you are having with trig, I am sure I can help you.

Yoga

I have practiced yoga for over a decade to stay in shape and to aid in weight loss. I received basic instruction in yoga while in massage therapy school (1997-98) and have been doing it ever since. I also do T'ai Chi.

Zoology

I taught Physical Anthropology at the community college level for six years. This is a subject that requires a broad knowledge of zoology, especially epidemiology, genetics, evolutionary biology, and vertebrate anatomy and physiology. I attended 150 hours of anatomy and physiology instruction during massage therapy school. I also taught high school biology for one year.
