I'm an award-winning English teacher whose performance has led WyzAnt to rank me in the top 1 per cent of their thousands of tutors nationwide. I've offered broad and consistently successful instruction in grammar, speech, reading, writing, literature, history, film study, and test-taking skills to students of every age and ability level, including speakers of ten different European and Asian languages. As a Fulbright or visiting professor, I have taught the latter groups in settings ranging from the United States and Canada through Central Europe to China and Japan.

I graduated magna cum laude/Phi Beta Kappa from Swarthmore College with a major in history and hold advanced degrees in English from two of the most prestigious universities in this country: MA with high honors, Columbia; PhD with distinction, Johns Hopkins. I have published extensively in both print and electronic media on subjects ranging from folk music and grand opera through travel and restaurant reviews to literary, cinematic, and Biblical studies. My breadth of expertise is further attested in my varied WyzAnt tutorial certifications. That wealth of knowledge equips me to work with students in practically any area of mutual interest, and to help my clients develop and perfect essays on almost any topic that a teacher might assign.

Students who begin work with me nearly always continue for months at a time, or even longer. They award my teaching consistently superior ratings, and they respond appreciatively to my easygoing manner and sense of humor. Whatever the subject might be, all of my teaching is grounded in my firm beliefs in "starting where the student is," and in positive encouragement as the best means to helping students to discover talents they had not suspected they had, to achieve their goals, and to realize their fullest potential.

Art History

I minored in art history as an undergraduate in the Swarthmore College Honors program. I delight in the subject, continue to study it, to broaden and invigorate my knowledge by visiting major art museums across the world and attending lectures offered there, and by successfully incorporating into my history and literature courses and tutorials analyses of works of art ranging from prehistoric "fertility sculptures" through Paleolithic cave paintings and Gothic cathedrals to 20th century Abstract Expressionist masterworks.

English

My credentials in English include advanced degrees in the field from two of the most prestigious universities in this country: MA with high honors, Columbia; PhD with distinction, Johns Hopkins. As a university professor of English and a professional writer, I've developed an extensive record of publications on subjects ranging from folk music and grand opera through travel and restaurant reviews to literary, cinematic, and Biblical studies. My tutorial certifications include all of the traditional language arts: grammar, literature, reading, writing, vocabulary, and test preparation. My breadth of expertise is further demonstrated by my certifications in American, European, and world history; art history; philosophy; geography, government and politics, and social studies. I am thus well equipped to help my clients to develop and polish essays or research papers on almost any topic that a teacher might assign. English is the medium of teaching and learning in our country, and strengthening one's skills in the language greatly enhances her/his prospects for success in any educational undertaking.

ESL/ESOL

As my WyzAnt profile shows, I'm an award-winning English teacher whose performance has led WyzAnt to rank me in the top 1 percent of their 36,000 tutors nationwide. I can offer you extended, broad, and consistently successful experience in teaching all dimensions of the language--listening, speaking, reading, and writing--to non-native speakers of every age and ability level. My hundreds of students have included speakers of Polish, Czech, Slovak, Spanish, Hungarian, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese. I have worked with them in both European and Asian settings as well as in the United States, and I have helped them all in diverse and major ways.

Beyond my certifications in ESL, TESOL, and TOEFL preparation, my profile also shows that I am qualified to tutor across an unusually broad range of subjects. I thus can strengthen a student's language skills in practically any area of mutual interest, and in the service of equally varied educational and career objectives. I supplement my instruction with a wealth of printed and recorded aids to language teaching, practice, and testing.

My students award my teaching consistently superior ratings, and I offer my first hour's lesson free-of-charge.

I look forward to hearing from you, and to answering any questions you may have.

Study Skills

I was a (very successful) student for many years, to and through the PhD, and therefore demonstrably acquired and practiced the skills necessary to that success. In turn, I've been an equally successful teacher or tutor of students of every age and ability level, including speakers of ten European and Asian languages. No few of those students have told me that I had taught them "how to be a student" or "how to study" in myriad subject areas. My twenty-eight WyzAnt certifications attest to that breadth of expertise.
