I am a semi-retired speech therapist (SLPA) and educator with 20+ years experience teaching toddlers through adults. Teaching is my passion and my gift. Specializing in language based remediation, I have extensive experience working with dyslexia, dysgraphia, poor spelling, handwriting, auditory processing disorder, ADHD, as well as Special Needs.
I am a pleasant person, fun-loving and incorporate games and hands-on activities to engage my student. When I work with a student, they see, hear, touch, move around and manipulate the lesson. This aids in retention. My students are excited to see me, we enjoy our time together.
My reading program is unique and proven in a clinical setting with hundreds of students. After assessing reading deficits such as fluency, decoding, and comprehension, I create an individual reading plan for each student. I incorporate all deficit areas in each tutoring session; attention and focus, reading, writing, spelling, auditory processing, etc. I teach the student how to use their strengths while improving their weak areas. The student's self esteem is always paramount in my tutoring.
I use Orton Gillingham methods, which are the only research proven methods to teach the dyslexic brain. Dyslexic brains are wired differently and they must be taught reading, writing and spelling in a different method. I integrate several proven techniques to improve reading skills; decoding, fluency and comprehension.

As the Therapy Manager of an SLP office, I researched, developed and implemented an effective Orton Gillingham based dyslexia program used in speech and language therapy offices today. The program incorporates the principals of brain plasticity, reconnecting of brain synapses through whole body movement focusing on directionality exercises and games. Then I use an Orton Gillingham influenced multi-sensory explicit and systematic phonics program for phonemic awareness, spelling and reading. This program goes from basic phonemic awareness through high school level reading (Greek and Latin roots). Handwriting is done through systematic progression. Each and every dyslexic student is unique and therefore every student's program is based solely on their specific needs.
I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and have been teaching not only children but their teachers as well. I have taught grammar from the early childhood level to high school, in public, private and home schools. I like to keep it fun and as simple as possible using programs like Easy Grammar and Daily Grams. Even Mad Libs are a fun way to introduce simple grammar. After the student grasps the general concept of grammar, then we move into more detailed grammatical structure.

As an Early Childhood Specialist and pediatric speech therapist, I have used a systematic phonics program with all my students. I have experience using Recipe for Reading, Barton Reading, Hi Hat, as well as other phonics programs. Since my specialization is dyslexia, the ability to properly teach and demonstrate phonics in a memorable way is necessary. With my training as a speech therapist, I am able to accurately produce each phoneme for reproduction by the student.
As a Speech Therapist I taught remedial reading every day with over 140 pediatric patients, from first grade through high school. I have used most phonics programs, but I have learned that Orton Gillingham methods are the most effective. I use Recipe for Reading and The Barton Reading and Spelling System. These go through high school level reading. I will "review progress" regularly using Benchmarks and move a student through the developmental levels as quickly as they grasp a lesson. I have taught vocabulary at every level from babies to adults. With a degree in Early Childhood Education I taught both a class full of children as well as their teachers. I believe the key is immersion, just like in learning a foreign language. The child must see, hear and be engaged with words every day. The age of the child would determine how I would teach vocabulary now; games for younger children, Greek and Latin roots for older children.
