ADD/ADHD
Based on over ten years of both classroom and tutoring experiences with students with ADD/ADHD,I know that each student is capable of increasing her/his skill level and confidence in any academic subject. This can be achieved by using some time tested techniques such as breaking subject matter up into short mini-lessons and pairing the lessons with visual and hands on activities. Including positive reinforcement and patience is also critical in assisting a student with ADD/ADHD in learning and retaining skills. I have found that by "switching it up" students are able to focus more and therefore enjoy their success.
American History
I have had the pleasure of teaching American History at both elementary and middle school levels. Imagining the early days when America was known as the New World, sorting out the intricate details of the signing of the Constitution, or trying to understand the motivations that lead to war, can be difficult. I can assist you in learning these and other details about American History as well as provide you with study tips for easy fact memorization.
Aspergers
As an experienced classroom teacher and tutor, I have learned that getting to know the student with Aspergers and allowing the student to communicate what s/he is thinking during a lesson is key. Being in tune with her/his body language is also important to creating a good learning environment. Breaking subject matter up into short mini-lessons, paired with visual and hands on activities assists a student with Aspergers in learning and retaining skills and prevents boredom. Using those techniques paired with positive reinforcement and patience eases student frustration and assists the student in gaining the confidence needed for success.
Bible Studies
I have taught Bible studies at the 1st through 8th grade levels in certified Christian schools in the state of Florida. I have experience in teaching both Old and New Testament histories, as well as Bible into action curricula. I enjoy explaining the relevance of the teachings of the Bible and helping students understand how these teachings can be applied to day-to-day activities.
Elementary (K-6th)
I have been an active classroom teacher with students of all ages and I am familiar with curriculum and expectations for students K-6. I am qualified to assist students in all subject areas, having taught math, reading, science, social studies, spelling, and writing at these levels. I am also able to provide practice (including hands-on) and study methods that will sharpen retention and build self-confidence in the student.
English
My degree in English has allowed me the ability to spend a great deal of time learning not just the meaning of words, but their origins and uses in sentences. If you find that spelling or memorizing vocabulary words is difficult, or you just want to enrich your writing, I believe that I can help you to achieve your goal. I can also assist you with study tips that will increase your test success.
ESL/ESOL
I currently have both classroom and real world experience with speakers of Cambodian, French, Russian, and Spanish who are learning or strengthening English. For individuals whose native tongue is not English, I can provide lessons based on the student's goals, be they academic, employment based, or personal. I will assist the student in strengthening both spoken and written English through lessons in vocabulary, sentence structure, and subject verb agreement activities. I believe that structuring lessons throughout the individual's daily routine will build self confidence and will assist the individual in meeting his or her desired goals.
Grammar
I can provide guidance for you in the areas of identifying parts of speech, types of verbs and verb tenses, proper punctuation, plurals, and possessives. I can assist you in strengthening your grammar skills so that you can focus on the quality of your writing because you will feel confident that you are using correct grammar.
Literature
Reading a poem, short story, or novel can be fun and entertaining, but taking a quiz that covers specific details about setting, character descriptions, and rising action can be challenging. I can assist you in exploring literature in a way that will allow you to grasp the deeper meanings intended by the author as well as remembering key details of the piece while still enjoying the story that is told.
Prealgebra
I can help you improve your prealgebra skills by showing you how to break down the basic processes of prealgebra into steps that you can apply to equation solving. I can help you maintain or sharpen your skills with mental math, games, and practice activities and help you prepare for the next level.
Proofreading
Let me assist you in putting your proofreading skills to use. Taking what you know about grammar, punctuation, and writing and helping you organize and apply that knowledge to your written work will assist you in completing a polished assignment that you can turn in with confidence.
Public Speaking
As a high school and college student, I participated in speech and debate teams as well as theater productions. As a former corporate healthcare employee, I was responsible for giving regular presentations to as many as 300 people at a time. This gives me the unique ability to incorporate necessary fact, or speech class requirements (such as a demonstration speech) with appropriate techniques such as volume, rate, and dramatics when necessary. I believe I would be able to share these techniques with students to raise their comfort level in the area of public speaking and polish their skills as necessary.
Reading
I can help you gain confidence as a reader whether you are just getting started, reading for comprehension, or reading out loud for a presentation.
Special Needs
I have over 15 years experience working with individuals with special needs. I am sensitive to and comfortable with issues that are involved in assisting a learner who may be developmentally disabled, behaviorally challenged, medically fragile, or physically disabled. I believe that every student has the ability to be a success, regardless of any barriers s/he may experience. I am familiar with IEPs and believe tutoring can be tailored to those objectives. I am comfortable working with students who are in any educational setting: home, private, public, or specialized.
Spelling
I can help you improve your spelling skills of both familiar and unfamiliar words whether you are preparing for a weekly test, writing a paper, or preparing for a spelling bee. In addition, I can help you with study tips that will help ensure your continued spelling success.
Study Skills
As a classroom teacher, I prepared many test reviews and conducted classroom activities to strengthen students' knowledge of subject matter. By breaking down material, providing different types of assessment, and passing on time management and study tips that have a proven track record, I believe I can provide excellent study skills training.
For example, a student requesting study skills training in the area of vocabulary may increase his/her skill level by using flash card drills, grouping word types together, or breaking the assignment down into smaller increments. A student requesting assistance in math study skills would benefit from practice of necessary processes and practice problems in his/her current math level or block. Finding out what motivates a student is key to assisting him/her in increasing study skills, so time and attention is given to determining that information and putting it to use. Knowledge websites that provide activities, questions of the day, and practice tests with instant feedback is also key to student success.
Vocabulary
I would be happy to share with you the techniques I have used successfully in the classroom to help students strengthen vocabulary skills. These techniques are successful whether you need to memorize terms and definitions or write in a descriptive or persuasive manner.
World History
Battles, explorers, kings and queens, so many dates and places. Having taught world history, I know that there are so many details to remember. Let me share with you successful techniques that will help you increase your knowledge of world history. I can also provide you with study tips for quiz and test success.
Writing
If you are looking for assistance in any area of writing: grammar, punctuation, spelling, or breaking down a specific writing assignment to make sure all requirements have been met, I can help you. I can also provide you with prewriting tips and exercises that will help you increase your confidence as a writer.
