For those students who are gearing up for either or both the ACT and SAT tests, here are some tried and true preparation techniques:
1. Take advantage of and participate in the test preparation or practice test activities offered by your teachers. Your teachers know what you are required to do in each subject area and have designed the practice activities to maximize your success.
2. GO ONLINE! Visit the websites sponsored by the ACT and SAT or sites recommended by your teacher for tips and practice activities. Make sure you sign up for "question or word of the day" options.
3. Ask your teachers for a rubric or list of criteria for each subject. The SAT writing rubric has writing examples with required elements highlighted and shows the expected score you might receive. This is a good way to see if you need to practice or receive tutoring in a given subject before the test. Talk to an adult if you think you would benefit from tutoring before the test.
4. You have heard it before, but it really is good advice--get plenty of rest the night before the test. Eat a nutritious breakfast and take all the items on the "required" list to the test. Many of you will have a printed "admission" ticket that lists these items but if not, visit the test website. Don't wait to make sure you have these things the day of the test. Leave all items on the "not allowed" list at home. Leave early, so you will not be late.
5. Finally, take a deep breath and do your best!
