Texas A&M University (MEd)
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Texas A&M University I taught high school math subjects from basic math to calculus at a public high school in East Central Illinois for 34 years. During that time I also earned a master's degree in education. While there I started the computer education program at our high school. I also served as chairman of the math department for 28 years. During those years I served on the Advisory Panel for the Psychological Corporation in their development of a test to measure Computer Readiness. I have attended many of the International Society for Technology in Education annual conferences.
Even after a successful career in public school teaching I still have the desire to continue helping students to learn mathematics. To that end, I have spent the last 14 years successfully tutoring students (at a private learning center in South Florida) in high school, college, and professional math subjects ranging all the way from basic level high school math through IB math and AP Calculus up to college level calculus. I also have prepared students for the math portions of the SAT and ACT tests.
My approach to tutoring is to help you understand the logic and strategies in math concepts and the methods used to solve math problems. I will work with you to make math easier to understand and to help you succeed in your math course. I will expect you to put forth your best effort to learn.
I will provide periodic assessments of your progress. I will also expect you to provide me with notice of cancellation of our session at least four hours prior to our session time.

Al is very nice, funny, and really knows his math! When we started lessons, I wasn't sure I was even going to pass my college algebra class and now I might get a B as my final grade! If you are having trouble in math, I definitely recommend calling Al!
Thank you for your most kind words regarding my tutoring skills. Your achievement and improvement since I began tutoring you have been excellent. You have been a delight and joy to tutor. I wish you luck on your final and hope that you will achieve that "B" grade for the course.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Al M. passed a background check on 6/25/14. The check was ordered by Al through First Advantage. For more information, please review the background check information page.
After sending a message to Al, you will be able to order a new background check for $7.99. As part of your tutor selection process, we encourage you to run updated background checks. Please also review the safety tips for hiring tutors.
