I have spent the last twenty years teaching and interacting with a wide variety of students. I have taught students as young as preschool up through the high school level and into the first year or so of college.

I have a BA in Liberal Arts as well as my master's degree

I like to use a variety of hands on materials to teach. I also love using primary source materials rather than straight textbooks. There is a great deal that students can learn from the world at large and I like helping students to open that door and be successful in the greater world.

Currently I volunteer with the Volusia Literacy Council assisting adult learners in building reading, writing and various other language art skills.

I am a new resident to Florida having moved here last October from southern Oregon.

I truly believe that anyone has the ability to improve their educational skills if given the right attention to their needs. I look forward to the opportunity to assist my next student in having a successful educational experience.

The subjects I specialize in are all forms of reading, English, grammar and punctuation, literature and history. I also tutor students in Biblical Hebrew.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cooking

I have taught cooking skills via 4-H programs for a number of years. My students have successfully entered a number of items in their county fair and walked off with ribbons.

Skills include not only how to cook various types of foods, but also skills in table setting and food prep as well as menu planning. In addition, I have supervised at a number of food prep contests through the 4-H program.

I have taught both children and adults in this subject.

Hebrew

Have you ever wondered what the Bible says in its original language? Take a class in Biblical Hebrew with me and I will help you decipher the text. I have taught Biblical Hebrew for about ten years. My students for this language have ranged from first grade to adult. Biblical Hebrew is not the same as Modern Hebrew as in what is spoken in Israel today. Biblical Hebrew is the language of the Bible and it differs from Modern Hebrew in a number of ways.

I use a variety of textual materials that include flashcards and various language games. I have an extensive collection of materials for all ages.

Learning Biblical Hebrew and building text reading skills in another language can be both exciting and fulfilling.

Piano

I have 12 years of classical piano studies under my belt. I teach beginning piano to both children and adults.

Lessons cover learning the keyboard and notes, reading sheet music, beginning music theory as well as the actual playing of songs and instrumental pieces. I do not teach chords other than the very basics. In addition I teach basic music history by teaching who the composers were, when they lived, the culture in which they lived and wrote and so forth.

I am a firm believer in piano exercises to strengthen the fingers, hands and wrist as well as regular practice. If a student is not willing to commit thirty minutes of daily practice to the study of piano, then I will not accept them as a student.

Study Skills

As an active teacher for many years I have developed a number of resources designed to help your child build study skills.

These study skills can be taught to children as young as elementary school ages up through and including high school ages. Of course the earlier your child learns good study skills the more successful your child will be.

Study skills include organizational skills, appropriate note taking, how to study for tests, ways to deal with test anxiety and much more.

Looking at this problem, we see what both sides of the equation have in common.  Both sides add 7 to the multiplication problems of 6x and 3x.  We are told that both sides of this equation are equal.  The way this problem is written x cannot be the same number on both sides. ...

1. Stay well hydrated as it helps one think better. 2. Get plenty of sleep the night before. 3. Don't cram the night before the exam. 4. Eat a solid supper the night before the exam as well as a good solid breakfast with both protein and carbs. And most importantly, remember to breathe during the exam.
