My name is Sarah and I am a professional tutor, working with students from Kindergarten through the university level. I received my MA in English from Florida Gulf Coast University in May 2013. In addition to my tutoring background, I also have experience teaching university English Composition I and II.

I love to work both individually and in groups with students of all ages. Though my specialty is English (writing, grammar, vocabulary, reading, etc.) I am also comfortable with and have experience tutoring math for grades K-8. I treat all of my students with respect and keep their needs/interests in mind when developing a tutoring plan. No two students are exactly the same, and therefore, I find it essential to change my tutoring style and methods to best help each individual student succeed.

I was a tutor with an SES-funded after school program from 2008-2012. Through this program I have tutored Elementary and Middle School students on campus and in-home. I have worked both one-on-one and in small and large group settings. Throughout my time with this company, I focused on developing and strengthening basic math and reading skills.

In addition to working with Elementary and Middle School students, I am also a tutor in the writing center at Florida Gulf Coast University. I help both undergraduate and graduate students improve their writing skills with emphasis on thesis, evidence/support, mechanics, grammar, and MLA/APA/Turabian/Chicago/AP formatting. As part of my work in the writing center, I receive periodic instruction and training for working with different learning styles to ensure that I tutor to the best of my abilities. I have helped many university students improve their papers from the freshman composition essay to graduate thesis work.

I am also experienced with helping with personal statements, resumes, cover letters, college application essays, and creative writing pieces.

Grammar

Grammar is a difficult subject for a lot of students. Even at the university level, I still see a lot of students struggle with grammar rules. Through my work in the writing center, I have learned effective ways of teaching grammar that seem to stick with the students! I also have supplemental material that allows students to test and develop their grammar skills.

Reading

I have experience teaching readers who are beginners to develop basic reading skills. I also have helped many students to improve reading comprehension, recognize cause and effect relationships, and identify main idea. I can also aid students in developing successful strategies for active reading.

Writing

In addition to being a tutor, I am also a freelance writer, editor, and writing consultant. I have taken graduate coursework in the instruction of English composition, and I have undergone extensive training in helping others to improve their writing.

Literature

As a second year English MA student, I am very familiar with and have developed my own strategies for reading and studying literature. I can aid a student in more effective reading strategies as well as the basics of literary analysis. My educational background has covered general American and British prose and poetry, as well as British theatre and contemporary literature.

Proofreading

I have done proofreading in professional publishing settings and I am able to instruct students on ways of identifying errors in their own (or a supplemental piece of) writing.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with students in K-6th grade in developing and improving basic math and reading skills, including, but not limited to, reading comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, arithmetic, geometry, and basic algebra. After I was finished tutoring students, they were tested for improvement according to Florida's state standards. I have worked with both students above grade level who require advanced instruction and remedial students who need to review and sometimes relearn certain skills.

Phonics

Throughout my tutoring career, I have worked with students who are just learning to read. Many of these students struggle with basic reading skills because English is their second language. Through work with phonics, I have helped students develop reading, writing, and spelling skills. When I work with Kindergarten students, I usually begin with phonics skills such as blending letter sounds to sound out words.
