I earned my Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems. I have a heavy math and computer background and love helping people develop a passion and appreciation for the two; both students and adults alike!
I feel extremely comfortable tutoring all levels of math up to college level Calculus 2 as well as most computer courses which include basic computer literacy (Microsoft Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to more advanced topics (C, Java, Computer Forensics, and soon Python). I also serve in the United States Army Reserves as a Signal and Communications Officer. I am all about keeping things simple and teaching using a "crawl, walk, run" method. Its one of the things that enables the Army to have the best trained soldiers in the world.
When students tell me "I'm not good at math" or state that they don't have "math in their DNA", my response is that they just never had someone teach them the way they want/need to learn. People aren't smart or dumb, we all just learn differently. Everyone can be really good at math, they just need people to explain things to them in a way they understand. I pride myself in making analogies of complicated concepts to things in real life, as well as just breaking a hard problem down into many simpler problems. I hope to not only work with you, but spark that appreciation and love for subjects that play such a huge role in my life.
I currently teach Algebra and Math for College Readiness (ACT Math Course) at Miami Northwestern Senior High School in Liberty City. Our Algebra students just got back their district scores for the Unit 1 & Unit 2 tests and we found out that of all the other schools in our demographic we performed the highest.
I scored an AFQT of 95 (meaning I scored better than 95% of people who took it) back in 2006 with a GT score of 127 (the primary line score for determining eligibility of Army jobs). I have since enlisted in the Army, gone to college, and am now a HS mathematics teacher while still serving in the US Army Reserves as a Signal Officer.
Chess is a hobby of mine (I've been casually playing for over 15 years). Last year I was the chess coach for a middle school where we qualified for the district championship tournament after advancing out of the regional rounds (this was the teams first year in competition and some students first time ever playing chess let alone competing in a tournament).
In 2011, I got my bachelors of science in computer information systems. As an Army Reservist, outside of my civilian job as a teacher, I am signal officer which means I train and advise commanders on anything related to computers and communication equipment (to include but is not limited to Windows and Macintosh systems).
I taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics at a Middle School in Miami Gardens last year. The first year I taught there, 75% of my students had learning gains greater than 1 year of expected growth (despite coming in significantly below grade level). Our school was rated an F school the year prior and went up to a C school in that one year.
