Hello all! My name is Isaac and I am passionate about languages. I have studied Chinese and Japanese for a total of 12 years, at the undergraduate and graduate levels alike, and greatly enjoy helping others along the same path. As a scholar of the languages, I've learned many of the "tricks of the trade" and am familiar with many of the software programs and websites that can be used as adjuncts to the learning process. As a teacher of the languages-- I have taught in informal contexts such as language exchanges, and formal contexts such as a college-level program-- I have learned how to adapt my approach to the student's particular learning preferences and needs, and instinctively understand how to motivate my students towards the mastery of the language.
I have extensive experience learning Chinese and Japanese at the following universities: Cornell University, UC Santa Barbara, and Vanderbilt University. I have also studied abroad at institutions such as Yamasa Institute (Japan), Beijing Foreign Studies University (China), and Taipei University (Taiwan). You may contact me for copies of my transcripts if you so desire.
I have taught in community schools, at the graduate level, and in "language exchanges" I have set up with foreign friends. I also have professional experience translating (into and from English) and am up-to-date on the latest language apps and software for learning/translating purposes.
In a word:
I have worked as a language teacher AND a speech-language pathologist in pediatric and adult settings alike, and am very comfortable working with both populations. I love teaching Chinese/Japanese because I have invested considerable time in studying both of them, have identified what I believe to be the common barriers to learning for students, and enjoy sharing my insights about how to overcome those barriers, so as to truly and thoroughly understand the language!
