Dear students and families, congratulations on taking the proactive step to be a part of the WyzAnt community. You will find tremendous support here, and I am happy to offer my services through this successful learning organization. My expertise lies in the fields of writing, editing, English (as a first or second language), critical reading and thinking, world religions and religious studies, study skills, and brainwave entrainment. I have taught professionally in elementary, high schools, and Florida International University and have tutored privately in Baltimore and recently, Miami, for over 10 years.
There is no typical tutoring session with me. Keeping the student's personality, needs and goals in mind, we shape the learning experience together so that every lesson feels personal, relevant, empowering and fresh. I believe strongly in guiding the student to discovery and training the mind to be open, flexible, and sharp. A sharp, creative, open mind is the greatest tool we can possess.
Some of my background:
As an 8th grader, Johns Hopkins University hand-selected me to take the SAT early for my exceptional verbal scores on standardized testing. In high school, I continued to score in the highest PSAT and SAT percentiles in critical reading, writing, and literature. When it was time to apply to graduate school, my GRE verbal and writing scores were again, at the very top of the field. At Juniata College, I was named to the National Dean's List and chosen for Omicron Delta Kappa, a prestigious leadership honor society. While at FIU, completing a Master's degree in Religious Studies,I was named 'Student of the Year', chosen to represent FIU at a private event with the Dalai Lama, and awarded highest honors for my Thesis on Buddhist Metaphysics.
Along the way, I have been a private tutor (in Maryland and Pennsylvania), teen adventure trip leader and outdoor educator (Camp Hazen, Chester, CT), yoga instructor (FIU, Palmer Trinity School, Yoga Center of Key Biscayne), Track and Field and Cross Country coach (Notre Dame Preparatory, Baltimore, MD and Palmer Trinity School), high school teacher (Lansdown, MD, Parksville, MD, Overlea, MD, and Palmer Trinity School), university Writing and Rhetoric instructor (FIU), and Religious Studies adjunct faculty (FIU). In all earnestness, I enjoy reading games with 5 year olds as much as I love teaching algebra and yoga to teenagers and discussing high philosophy with graduate students.
Every student I've ever worked with has been my teacher as well. I look forward to meeting you soon.
