I am a graduate student from Florida State University with a Mathematics Education Specialist Degree; I also have a Masters Degree in ESOL for grades K- 12 and Higher Education. I began my career in teaching 25 years ago. I am a certified Mathematics teacher for middle grades (5-9) and ESL. I have worked in many different schools across the country because of my spouse military background.
I taught English for Speakers of Other Languages and Mathematics for Dade County Public Schools for thirteen years and then acquired a teaching position with a college where I teach College Prep. Arithmetic, College Prep Mathematics, College Prep Algebra, (EAP) English for Academic Purposes levels 0100 to 0400 and 1500- 1600. These encompass the beginners’ level one through level 6 in the areas of grammar, reading, speech, listening and writing. I enjoy tutoring in an informal, comfortable setting. I work hard to ensure that all learners improve their maximum potential. I organize and create curriculum to fit each learner's needs.
The ability to tutor in a one-on-one situation encourages students to ask very specific questions about the things that they need help with. This one-on-one environment also allows me, the tutor, to tailor the curriculum and approach to best meet the needs of the student. So if I sense that a student may be struggling with specific concepts, I will take them back to the basics to give them a better understanding of the foundation that they need.
Being able to help a student have a better understanding of a concept that will prove critical in their course work is very rewarding. I continually try to adapt my interaction to best read the students in terms of their understanding of the material. I love the moment when you are working with a student, and you can tell that the information has really clicked, and they understand the concept. It is really a privilege to be able to be a part of the learning process for each learner.
