All of Juan’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Juan’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Basketball

Two of my passions are to teach and play basketball. My qualifications for the subject of basketball include a combination of coaching and playing. I have coached a wide variety of players whose age, experience, fitness and goals span a large spectrum.

Leagues and/or schools in which I have acted in these roles include the YMCA, Midnight All-Stars (MAS) Hoops League, Police Athletic League (PAL), Florida International University's Recreational Center, University of Miami's Wellness Center, Miami Sunset Senior High School, Miami Southridge Senior High School, L.A. Fitness, 24-hour Fitness, and the Miami Rescue Mission Community Activity Center among others.

My philosophy as a player is to help my teammates develop trust in each other and strive to utilize everyone's talents effectively - a natural responsibility of a point guard. This can be extremely difficult playing with people who you do not know. In other words, it takes talent and patience, both of which I have developed since I was a child.

I provide my trainees the opportunity to become better individuals both on and off the court. My true payment? Watching them become better basketball players and knowing I helped them achieve their goal!

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past 5 years, I have worked as an environmental education outreach program coordinator for The Fairchild Challenge - a standard-based, multidisciplinary school competition.

During my appointment, I have developed projects, competitions, workshops, and supplemental activities for students in grades prekindergarten to twelfth. This also includes conducting teacher professional development courses for educators.

It is my responsibility to be able to effectively teach a student any lesson, in any subject, in grades preK-12th, at any given moment. This ability requires a certain level of talent, skill, patience and creativity. These are the reasons I am qualified for this subject.

Organic Chemistry

It was this course that I knew I wanted to also major in Chemistry. In addition to Biology, this subject fascinates with ease. It was also the course I truly discovered my talent for teaching. Like many others, my professor successfully brought the subject matter to life. I returned to class every week to teach dozens of my classmates (for free at the time) and was immediately filled with enthusiasm.

How many classes are students allowed to play with models during the exam? Not many! Armed with my models, dry-erase markers and sense of humor, I tutored dozens of students in Organic Chemistry 1 and 2. Most importantly, I helped them to develop an appreciation for the field. Needless to say, it helped me through college financially.

In addition and as I mentioned in a previous subject qualification submission, my experience as an environmental education outreach coordinator has kept me up to date with the field.

Photography

Who says you need a degree to be proficient at something? Photography happens to be one of the most forgiving subjects. Through continued advancements in technology, nearly anyone can be a photographer. However, making the most use of your equipment is a whole other topic.

In comes the tutor. I have been photographing professionally for 5 years, and conducted numerous workshops during this period for a wide range of students.

My specialization is with point and shoot and cell phone cameras, and I am also proficient with DSLRs. I also have experience using a variety of programs to further enhance images. My photographs have been used for and in a variety of publications including but not limited to, award-winning magazines, electronic flyers, award certificates, banners and promotional material.

Most people I have worked with want to photograph animals, plants, nature scenes, public and private events, and people. Macrophotography is also a popular area people are interest to learn more about - of which I too thoroughly enjoy. Most of all, helping my students gain the confidence to 'capture the moment' when it presents itself is priceless.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
