Need extra help in school? Let me help you succeed. I have more than ten years of experience teaching students with many different needs, from autism spectrum and ADHD to memory and math disabilities. I love to teach, especially math, up to and including Algebra II, and reading.

In addition to experience and a love of helping children succeed, I have two masters degrees in education, one in elementary education and one in special education. I have state certification in special education (pre-k to grade 12), elementary education, and primary education(k-3). However, my most recent teaching experience has been in middle school and high school.

ADD/ADHD

In addition to a master's degree and certification in special education, I have several years' experience in this area.

I have particular success with giving short breaks for movement between work periods. I also change types of activities frequently, maintain eye contact with the student(s), and allow them to walk around while they work.

Algebra 1

I have several years of experience tutoring students in Algebra 1.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring for many years. One of the subjects I have tutored is Algebra 2. I am able to break down the subject into small pieces to make it easier for students to understand.

Aspergers

In addition to a degree and certification in special education, I have several years of experience working with students with Aspergers.

One thing that works especially well (with all students, actually) is to guide the student using compliments. It has been my experience that the more often a teacher compliments a student, the more likely the student is to follow the routines. Another technique I have used is to discuss any issues that come up with the student himself. I had a student who used to fall asleep. I asked him whether he was sleeping because he did not want to participate. He indicated that was not the case and told me to do whatever would be necessary to keep him on task.

Autism

In addition to a masters degree and certification, I have several years of experience teaching students on the autism spectrum. I have used behavioral interventions to improve behavior and academic performance.

Dyslexia

I have a degree and certification in special education. I have helped my students with dyslexia improve their reading using a multisensory approach.

Elementary (K-6th)

In addition to a master's degree and certification in elementary education, I have many years' experience tutoring. I have found that I am able to break things into their smallest parts in order to help the students understand the material.

Elementary Math

I am a certified teacher with many years experience as a tutor. In addition to making use of manipulatives, I break down the material into small chunks to make it easier for the students to understand.

English

I am a certified teacher and have been tutoring for many years. I have taught and tutored all areas of English Language Arts: reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. I like to give the students an opportunity to use their imaginations in their written work.

ESL/ESOL

I have many years of experience helping students for whom English is a second language acquire the skills necessary to learn at grade level.

Geography

I have experience teaching geography. I begin by teaching the specific vocabulary of geography, including land forms and bodies of water. In addition, I stress the five themes of geography, in particular human-environment interaction. Finally, connect the subject matter to the student's everyday experience.

Phonics

I have a master's degree and certification in elementary education and primary education. I have taught first grade. I have also taught students who were in higher grades to read using phonics.

Prealgebra

I have have been tutoring Pre-Algebra for several years. I break the material into small chunks so that the students can more easily understand it.

Reading

I have studied reading remediation and successfully taught reading for several years at all levels.

Special Needs

I have a master's degree and certification in special education and several years of experience.
