Although I haven't had a lot of formal experience with tutoring, back in high school, I used to teach violin lessons to students in middle school. I've found that I really like working with kids slightly younger than me, because I enjoy taking care of and mentoring them. In terms of the standardized tests for which I would like to tutor (SAT and ACT), I know that the way I understand things is very intuitive, because I've tried teaching younger friends some tips and tricks before, and they've all understood my teaching methods quickly and scored higher. In fact, just last week I tutored a girl in anatomy at the hospital school near Duke, and I was able to very immediately invent some mnemonics for her to remember information for her quiz, even having never taken anatomy officially (only self-studied it for the MCAT. Overall, I find that my little tricks have proven to be useful, and given my love for working with people, especially those younger than me, I believe I would do a great job in tutoring people for the SAT and ACT.
I am a Taiwanese American, so Mandarin Chinese is one of my native languages. When I studied reading and writing in Chinese school when I was younger, I learned several effective exercises in learning the language— including completion, synonyms, antonyms, copying characters, etc. I've had experience tutoring friends for their SATs and patients at the Duke hospital school in anatomy, as well as younger students in violin. Therefore, I believe my teaching methods would translate nicely to teaching Mandarin.
I took private violin lessons for 11 years, and I participated in a lot of the top youth orchestras in my area, including Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, Starling Youth Orchestra, Regionals Orchestra, and the Ohio All State Orchestra. All of these required auditioning and competing with others for the positions, and I was able to get into the groups after hours and hours of practicing and honing my violin skills. I taught private tutoring lessons when I was in high school; I had 2 students. Both students were new to violin, and I was able to teach them the basics and foundations of how to play the violin very effectively. I really broke down the basics, first teaching them to play without their bows, and just learning to pluck the strings and where to place their fingers on the fingerboard. Both students improved dramatically, and their middle school orchestra teacher was very pleased with their progress under my guidance.
