Uh oh! You hate physics and math? Don't worry. I can coach you in these subjects and share my knowledge with you.
My name is Alexander and I graduated with a degree in Physics at the University of Havana in 1994. I got my PhD in Geophysics in 2006 at the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy (IGA) in Havana, Cuba. I worked as a scientific researcher at IGA for the last 18 years. I was the head of the Space Geophysics Department for 6 years until I arrived in the United States in October of 2012. In the Institute I worked in the research field of Space Physics, mainly in the topics, of Ionospheric Physics, Geomagnetism, Solar Wind-Magnetosphere-Ionosphere dynamical system coupling and Space Weather for the modeling and forecast of radio communications by short waves using the ionosphere.
As a physics graduate, I have some useful knowledge in physics and mathematics that I can share with you. In Cuba, as well as being a scientific researcher, sometimes I also taught things like space physics and topics of advanced mathematics and how they related to my research, for students of licentiate on physics and mathematics, at the University of Havana, and to students of engineers of electronics and telecommunications at the Polytechnic Institute of Havana. Besides as a way to introduce the spirit of scientific research and to spark passion for science in young people, I have also given many lectures and seminars to students in a special high school for exact sciences. Therefore, I am able to explain complex concepts in a way that is easily understood.
I also have experience with middle and high school, because of my two daughters who are 18 and 12 years old. The oldest is studying physics at the University of Havana. I have always been there to contribute to her successes in math and physics. Starting at a very young age, I began to teach her math and she went on to win numerous math and physics contests throughout elementary, middle, and high school. I made sure that she understood how wonderful the world of science is, and eventually she fell in love with math and physics! I helped her develop mathematical skills, like algebraic thinking and logical reasoning. Also my youngest daughter has received the same training from me. She has also won many contests in school so far, and perhaps she will go on to follow the footsteps of her older sister.
I also helped as a tutor for many of my daughters’ friends and they have gained a better understanding of math and physics. I was responsible for doing this because of the ongoing deterioration of the Cuban education system within the last 20 years.
The reason I have a passion and facility for teaching math and physics is because during my first years as a university student, I studied in a pedagogical institute. I was originally studying to be a professor of physics and astronomy, mainly for middle and high school. There I took courses on psychology, methods for teaching, and early math and physics courses. I even participated in student teaching at a middle school for a couple of years. After that, however, I changed my focus of study to purely physics, but I still feel a passion for teaching.
That is almost the complete story of my life! I'm a very friendly person and if you need some help with trigonometry, algebra, calculus, physics or astronomy, send me an e-mail and I would be happy to help you.
