Years of experience living overseas provided me with the opportunity to learn different languages and skills. Additionally, a career in the banking and finance industry helped me acquire knowledge of and keep abreast of the latest developments in this environment. This experience also afforded me the opportunity to master different business-oriented applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Quicken, Quickbooks and others.

Prior to attending Graduate Business School at the University of Miami, I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Comparative Studies at the University of Essex in Colchester, England, which allowed me to study subjects such as Art History, Latin American and African Literature as well as the Classics from Greek, English, French and Spanish Literature.

During my year abroad, I had the opportunity to teach Spanish and English in an informal environment to colleagues whose job profile required at least a working knowledge of either of these two languages. In addition, as some of my teaching experience took place within the framework of my professional career, I also taught specialized terminology that applies to finance, banking, agriculture and the music industry.

In teaching languages, I prefer a loosely structured approach based largely on conversation with some instruction on grammar, punctuation and phonetics. Reading is also important, and I like to choose material with which the pupil feels comfortable and is interested in.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

The pensum for this subject can be adjusted according to the student's individual needs. On an ordinary basis, the study of art history would begin with the ancient Egyptian civilization, then continue to Mesopotamia, Crete, the early and classical Greek periods, Romanic and Gothic art, the Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Impressionistic and continue to include 20th century art including Dada, Cubism and abstract expressionism.

Business

My business background includes some 25+ years in various areas of business endeavor. Upon graduation from Graduate Business School I worked for several years in banking, as can be gleaned from my resume. Later on in life, I had the opportunity to serve in management positions at various companies involved in music production, coffee farming, motorcycle sales and distribution and financial consulting. In this latter capacity, I also participated for clients in the analysis and restructuring of their existing business entities. These experiences have provided me with a fairly broad view of business management and operations in a wide assortment of activities.

English

The English tutorial program needs to be designed and implemented in accordance to the student's particular needs taking into account those areas in which the student demonstrates strengths or weaknesses.
Reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and grammar are essential tools in mastering any language and are an integral part of the tutorial program.
Reading and writing exercises help strengthen the student's grasp on the proper grammatical structures required to achieve fluency and a coherent level of expression. To that end, we will emphasize essay writing and reading comprehension tests in order to improve the student's grasp on these aspects of language mastery.

ESL/ESOL

Learning English is one of the primary challenges a newly-arrived individual faces when settling in the United States or other English-speaking countries. I went through that experience early in my life and thoroughly enjoyed the process.
Another important aspect that speakers of other languages learn while adapting to the new environment is the cultural context in which their new lives will be unfolding, which is a very useful tool in the process of adaptation.

General Computer

Today's competitive work environment requires that an individual possess at least rudimentary computer skills which will likely be honed in the course of his or her professional career through the use of specialized software developed for that purpose. It is therefore essential that the student understand the nature of the various components that integrate a personal computer system, hardware and software, networks, the Internet and its tools and practical applications that may be useful in familiarizing the students, even the non-technically inclined, with the tools at their disposal. That is essentially the orientation provided in this kind of tutoring.

Grammar

In addition to the purely structural aspects of the English language, it is also important to become familiarized with the usage, which sometimes presents difficulties for both foreigners and native speakers.
As someone who went through the experience of acquiring knowledge of English as a second language and therefore had to "go the extra mile" to master it, I am very enthusiastic about the idea of helping others achieve that goal.

Literature

There is a vast body of literature stemming from many different cultures and it is essential to distinguish the individual needs and requirements of the student within the context of this body of knowledge. There are also many different literary forms, currents and genres. We can provide tutoring in North American, Latin American and European literature primarily. The course work provides information on the origins of each, their various forms, the most renowned authors in each of these forms and an overall understanding of their place in the social and historical context in which they were produced.

Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access is a versatile software that can be used for tasks as simple as keeping track of your contacts or school attendance records and as complex as developing constantly updated databases of inventory, clients and the like.

Personally, I use Access primarily as a database development tool and would be glad to share this and other uses of this powerful software.

Microsoft Excel

Excel is without a doubt one of the most useful and most widely used spreadsheet software available today. It is a very useful tool whose applications range from everyday arithmetical purposes to sophisticated formula and macro-driven calculations.
The Excel tutorial will familiarize the student with the essential structure of Excel, the workings of a spreadsheet, the menu features, the use of basic formulas and their various applications. Later, the student will learn how to generate graphs, format the contents of the spreadsheet, link the information to other spreadsheets and to other components of the MS Office Suite, such as Word, Access and PowerPoint.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been using Outlook as my personal organizer virtually since it the product was first launched on the market and find it a very useful tool in organizing appointments, tasks, e-mails and contacts.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Great presentations are an important tool to convey your messages. If you have a new concept you would like to present to potential clients, few tools are as effective as a properly-structured Power Point presentation.
I have used PowerPoint for tasks as diverse as preparing slides of fairy tales with voice-over for my little daughter to glossy presentations for clients. You can achieve all this and more with Power Point.

Microsoft Windows

As the dominant interface platform on the Internet, Microsoft Windows is a powerful tool and one that has become increasingly easier to manage.

I am currently using Windows 7 and have acquired proficient knowledge of its workings, which I would like to share with those interested in learning how to use this tool.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is without a doubt one of the most widely-used text processing softwares in the world. I personally use it almost daily to write letters, articles and even blog entries.
Word is a user-friendly program, the knowledge of which can quickly and easily be acquired. You will be delighted at all the features this program has to make your correspondence look perfect and stylish.

QuickBooks

QuickBooks is an excellent tool for small businesses and start-up companies. It allows the owner-manager to track the entire business cycle with ease and accuracy.
I have had the opportunity to use QuickBooks as the Financial Manager for a group of small and medium-sized companies with excellent results.
Once you master the basics of QuickBooks, you will be able to track billing, customers, employees, employee benefits and all the necessary tools for running a successful business.

Spanish

The teaching approach will be the result of a brief evaluation of the student to determine his or her level of proficiency. Depending on the student's academic requirements, greater or lesser emphasis will be applied to grammatical structures, the conjugation of verbs, nouns, pronouns and prepositions.
It is important to reinforce the structural aspects of the language through reading exercises and, last but not least, a good deal of conversation to reinforce the theoretical knowledge and apply it to everyday use.

World History

World History is by definition a very broad subject and it is is essential to identify the period which the student is interested in or required to learn about.
Once the topic has been identified, we can start delving on the particular period. It is important that the student be placed in context regardless of the period in question since history is seldom an isolated topic that can be taught or learned in a vacuum. It is therefore important to investigate and understand the why's and the who's of the period we will be studying so as to gain a broader perspective of the events involved.

Writing

A picture may be worth a thousand words, yet it is equally effective sometimes to use concise, clear language to express our thoughts and ideas. Writing is an essential tool in both a personal and business environment. As an undergraduate student in Comparative Literature, I was able to improve my own writing skills through both persuasive and expository writings while my business career later required that these ideas be transmitted in the most clear and succinct way possible.
