I'm a writer, a poet, and passionate about writing. Whether an essay, a letter, or a story, I believe that everyone has a voice, and can say things on paper that they cannot always say out loud.

When I was young, I had trouble speaking up, due to circumstances that I could not control. So I turned to pen and paper, to say everything I couldn't otherwise.

I write every day, and I am always looking for what's underneath the underneath, and I encourage you to do the same.

American History

To understand the history of the United States of America, one must start before the first Europeans set foot on these shores. What roles do race, religion, and the quest for wealth and land play in shaping our country? How does one read a document such as the US constitution?

Whatever questions you may have--ask. You may be surprised by the answers.

Elementary Math

"Two and two are four, four and four are eight..."

But there's so much more to math than that. It's a way of learning music, learning how to think, how to organize and arrange things. Those lines and squiggles? Just ways of telling you if you're adding, subtracting, multiplying...and so on.

English

English: no two people speak, write, or read it in the same way. Its roots go back centuries--and it is constantly evolving.

What are the differences between British and American English? What does "local color" mean? How do popular culture, technology, and street slang create new words, reinvigorate old ones, and keep the language thriving?

Let's explore. Come on!

Grammar

Do you eat, shoot, and leave?

Does "syntax" make you wonder whether you have to pay a tax for sins?

What does verb conjugation mean? What are dangling participles? And how dangerous are metaphors?

Grammar may not be your grandma, but it can help you speak, write, and think well.

Proofreading

If u cn sea the erors in this snetanc, you're proofreading skils are gud.

If, on the other hand, you've read the previous sentence and are thinking, "Something's off, but what? And where?"--and you find that the spell-check on your computer doesn't correct every spelling error--I'm more than happy to act as your second set of eyes.

Reading

A book opens worlds to children of all ages. Come along for the adventure!

SAT Reading

The reading portion of the SAT measures what you've learned, how well you can apply what you have learned, and where you can improve your reading skills.

Reading is more than the scanning of dry data; it's a way of understanding the world around you, exploring a wide variety of ideas and places, and taking pleasure in the process.

SAT Writing

What scares you about the writing portion of the SAT?

Does the idea of writing an essay make you uneasy? Suppose I tell you: an essay is an attempt to express thoughts and ideas, and there are many ways to write an essay. Do you blog, or keep a bound journal? Then you've got raw material for any type of writing--fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.

I can show you what I've learned about writing, and how to apply it to the SAT.

Spelling

Life may not be a spelling bee, but knowing how to spell words can make reading, writing, and understanding English much easier. Yes, "I before E except after C"--but also the exceptions to that rule, such as feisty, or foreign.

What are the differences between two, to, and too? Or sum and some? Where does "silent e" come into play? And what is a schwa?

I can help you put the letters together, and that's a fine place to start.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary: the set of words that you learn and gather over time.

Whether by hearing, in reading, or through writing, you learn, master, and apply a language every day. Maybe you play word games, work crossword puzzles, or use a Word-A-Day calendar. These are great ways to learn new words, and expand your vocabulary.

There's more to vocabulary than meets the eye. Let me show you.

World History

What made Alexander "The Great"?

Why is Ivan IV of Russia known as "The Terrible"?

What separates the Renaissance from the Middle Ages, and how far did the Roman Empire really extend?

You've got questions. That's good; to get to the answers, look back at the world, what shaped it, shapes it now, and may determine, to some degree, the future.

And let's go beyond the facts laid out in the texts: explore the art, the politics, and the culture. How are myths shaped? How did nations get their shapes? And so on.

You've got questions. Let's dig in.

Writing

Writing is not just a marketable skill; it's a way of speaking and expressing thought by alternative means.

Not everybody becomes an author, an essayist, or a poet; that said, the practice of writing can improve your speech, give you insight into how people think, and yes, give you an edge in the workforce.
