Algebra Equations

If a conversion is as follows: 2 m/hr = mi/min. Does the 2 go with both the numerator and denominator or just the numerator?

I would like to know If the 2 is with the numerator only or both the numerator and denominator.  The 2 is placed directly center before the first ratio.

Algebra

use the method of subtraction to solve the system of linear equations. 3x - y = 3 and 7x -2y = 10

this should read 3x -y = 3

                        7x - 2y = 10

I am continually getting the methods confused, this is for algebra I

By subtracting you want to eliminate on of the variable so that you are only left with one. In this case it would be easier to get rid of the y.

so let multiply the top equation by two and you will get

6x - 2y = 6

7x - 2y = 10.        Subtract them

-x = -4

x = 4

then plug in the x to one of the equations and you can get your y, it is easier to plug into the first equation 

3x - y = 3

3(4) - y = 3

12 - y = 3 

y = 9

area of rectangle

a rectangle has an area of 48 sq cm and a length of 16 cm. what is the width of the rectangle?

Area = length times width

so A = lw

A/l = w

48/16 = w

3 = w

Unfortunatey the argument is not complete so you can't really say that the argument is valid

It cancels out. The best way to see this is by factoring out the x giving you x(3-3) = x(0). Anything times zero is zero, so it cancels out.
