Hi! Thanks for taking a look at what I can bring to your family!
I have been an English teacher for 30 years now, mostly in private college prep schools. I have also written four books - three English texts and even a science fiction novel.
Build on the strengths and fortify the imperfections. My approach is unique in that way. Most tutors simply address what is missing; I prefer to celebrate and reinforce what is already there and then go after what needs work! For thirty years working with thousands of students, I have always maintained that the great master Michelangelo was spot-on:
-In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.-
My attitude to tutoring is that helping a student is not done in isolation. For example - our first session focuses on identifying where:
1. The student is currently having difficulty - this includes a review of any test results, papers, notes from the teacher, a thorough discussion with the student and her/his parent(s) or guardian to help isolate the specific subject area difficulty. I understand baseline testing and use the strategy each year with my own classroom students.
2. I also discover other academic difficulties the student may have to help determine, as best as is possible, if the student's needs are content-related to a specific course of thought - or if there is a pattern which might indicate content difficulties along with weak skill sets (such as reading, writing, spelling, etc.).
Based on this information, I develop an Individualized Coaching Strategy, which is shared with the student and his/her parents.
We then become a team - with each 'player' understanding and agreeing to fulfill specific responsibilities to achieve success. It takes a village, well, you know the rest...
Once tutoring is underway, my Individualized Coaching Strategy reports will be discussed with the student and with you, the adults who care enough to make a difference. Each report identifies areas that the student needs to review, as well as what you or older siblings can to do to help.
As my profile notes, I am familiar with the SQ3R method for helping develop reading comprehension abilities, time management skills, the Cornell system for taking notes during class, writing an effective five-paragraph essay along with thesis development, vocabulary improvement, graphic and semantic thought mapping, SAT and ACT prep, and so much more.
If you are ready to work hard, and to take chisel and pen in hand, then let's get things started!
To be brief, which is a must for any writing, I have written four books, edited thousands of students' essays over the years, and have been a part of the team that drafted New York State's English standards. I have been proofreading for over 30 years now, and I have a pretty good insight into what works and what does not.
I have NY and FL certification in English 6-12, and Educational Administration.
Effective study skills tutoring is so much more than about getting together an hour or so a week. It takes strong habits of the mind, which takes a good deal of thinking about how to think, and then putting it into action!
As for specifics, I am familiar with the SQ3R method for helping develop reading comprehension abilities, time management skills, the Cornell system for taking notes during class, writing an effective five-paragraph essay along with thesis development, vocabulary improvement, graphic and semantic thought mapping, and so much more. In short, I can help your student learn to read, write, and recall!
