I have a strong background in biology, ecology, and mathematics, and am currently studying the behavioral ecology of large predators like sharks. I teach college students and am looking to help younger students (K-12) succeed in course work they may be struggling with as well as provide motivation to improve their educational habitats. In addition to experience in the classroom, I have served as a tutor, mentor for young adults with the Boy Scouts of America, and hands-on teacher about the environment in the Florida Everglades. I aim to use active learning methods with students by pointing them to the answer or encouraging them to review previous material rather than simply providing answers to questions - I’ve found this enables students to actually learn material rather than memorizing it for a short period. I also use real-life examples from my work and my colleagues’ work to improve understanding. And, in addition to my educational background I also have considerable experience in athletics and outdoor activities.

Biology

I am currently a graduate student pursuing a PhD in biology and therefore feel confident tutoring students in this subject at any level.

Ecology

My PhD program is in biology and focuses on the behavioral ecology of large predators, and thus I have a strong understanding of ecology and the environment.

I am currently a PhD student and have a wealth of experience studying for exams and practicals. So many times students simply memorize material for an exam and then forget most of it days later. However, by relating material to previously learned information, students are better able to understand what they are studying and are better able to remember information for long periods and use the knowledge they gain in future courses.

Basketball

I played basketball for more than 13 years into college and have a strong knowledge of both individual fundamentals and team play. Fitness, skill, and cooperation are important aspects in this sport and I have the ability to teach individuals how to improve in these areas of their game.

College Counseling

Writing personal statements and proposed study plans can be difficult for students who are inexperienced with writing such documents. Over the past 9 years, I've gained a wealth of experience writing essays/letters for undergraduate college applications, academic scholarships, grant proposals, and fellowship applications.
